Absolutely. After 15 years of relative domestic bliss, the house next door was converted to a hostel by the unscrupulous landlord without any consultation. It's very profitable, attracting huge funding from local authorities. It took the neighbours, with help of the police and our local councillors 18 months to have it shut down and finally put an end to the drugs, violence (regular police intervention) and anti social behaviour. Hope your research has a positive outcome for you, Girl82.

Quite right. But then the transient nature of the occupants means that the situation could change very quickly. I think Girl82 is being very sensible.

As for t.e.d's accusation of "council house hating bigot", I think the OP implied that she wouldn't be bothered if it's a regular council house... so the comment was out of order.

I think there is significant difference between a 'private' hostel and one run by authorities for a particular purpose. As described by stacey-lyn this sound more like a common lodging house used by local authorities as a short-term fix than a 'hostel' designed for purpose. The house next to us was turned into a common lodging house for a short time, a lodger there was in fact murdered (not in the house). It wasn't a good experience, but more because of the transient nature of the 'lodgers' (one never knew who was legitimately there) than for noticeable disruptions. There are many different types of hostels - some clearly do have disruptive people in them, many are simply vulnerable. It very much depends how they are run, but many can be run well.

I think I would rather be next to a (properely run) hostel, where the 'problems' on an individual basis tend to be short-lived than living next to a 'nightmare' family - with constantly crying children, barking dogs or loud music. Or many other annoyances which I cannot expect (relatively) quickly to go.

Of course I'd even more like to live next to a family as wonderful, quiet, unassuming and delightful as my own (there doesn't seem to be a 'smiley' for irony)

Exactly Jeremy. Most people don't want to live next to anything but other families-- shops, warehouses, hostels are all things that cause concern. Attacking Girl82 like some sort of bigot is ludicrous.

Hi Stacey-Lyn, thanks for sharing your story and I'm glad you managed to resolve what sounds like a very stressful situation! Your post did get me thinking though - does that mean any "private" dwelling owned by an unscrupulous landlord could simply be converted into a hostel or something of that ilk (with the relevant permissions)? Worrying!

Great idea, I didn't think of that - thanks Ian!

shows that neighbour problems are not just about something like a hostel next door. Indeed a properly run hostel (as opposed to a private common lodging house let-out to a council for 'problem' lets) is probably more easy to negotiate with where there is a nuisance.

I can not believe the audacity of your original post are you seriously suggesting that because you are considering buying a house that is next door to a council owned property that you will be subject to anti social behaviour and "scumbags" as per your next post. I expect that with an attitude like yours many would not want you as their neighbour whether council tenant or not!

Oh for goodness sake Nicci...if you actually bothered to read my original post you would see that I wasn't saying what you're insinuating at all. I would explain again but to be honest, life is far too short. By the way, you should hook up with another poster on here called Sue - I'm sure you'd get on like a house on fire (that is, if you're not the same person *rolls eyes*). And for the record, I wouldn't want to have you as my neighbour either!

Interesting...thanks, Penguin.

Excuse me?

No I'm not the same person.

Many people know who I am off the forum, and I have only ever used my own name on here.

I run http://www.thegooseisout.com with my partner.

Please don't come to any of our gigs. The people who come are lovely, and - shock horror - might even include people who live in hostels.

It is quite clear that here you agreed with James concerning the 'scumbags'.

In vino veritas

P.S Note to Girl82 - don't come to East Dulwich nobody want to live next to you.

*Sigh* Why don't people read things properly? It's quite clear from my original and subsequent posts that I have nothing against council tenants living next door - in fact, that's what I'm HOPING the property is! What I DON'T want is to inadvertently end up living next to a hostel. It's really not that hard to grasp, Mashcov.

Thanks Sue - I feel like a bit of a wally, it has to be said!

*Hic*

I did read your post properly which is why I quoted it in my post. James called people who live in hostels scumbags and you said 'Exactly! Thanks James'

You might want to keep off the wine for a bit you might be a bit more coherent if you do and yes you are a bit of a wally, is that what you are sighing about?

^^^ I don't want to live next to a hostel. If you have some sort of problem with that, then so be it. I will only be responding to constructive posters on this thread from now on, as frankly I (like most people!) have better things to do with my time than getting into arguments with people on a forum. Thanks to everyone who has offered helpful suggestions and advice so far! :D
Hey come on she wasnt attacking Council Tenants or Properties. Bit of a bad choice saying Hostels becuause you might get a Deaf Mute Hostel next door or Autistic Adults or Victims of Domestic Violence who would hardly be drawing attention to themselves I can see that an unsettleable Rowdy Alcoholics Hostel might be un attractive and there are one or two of those around but to be honest I dont think any searching would I dentify one. Try sitting outside on a Saturday Night?
