Loutwo
Market forces happen. Sometimes they work in our favour, sometimes they don’t. Get over it. I lament the loss of Iceland to this day, doesn’t mean I can force their hand on where they choose to open, or indeed where the yuppy brigade want to buy houses. They chose ED twenty years ago, and all the wannabe posh shops followed them. Not my bag, but hey ho. It happens. Now we have Poundland opened here, the chai latte lovers are crying into their organic vegan friendly breakfast cereal. Funny how their love of ‘independent shops’ only ever becomes an argument when it’s not something well established for years. And also, chains are ok as long as they’re not too ‘working class’. Hilarious. Louisa. bsand
I think the discussion needs to have something about air miles travelled for plastic tat made by exploited Chinese workers. Plus given that the strictly Poundland boat has long since sailed should hereinafter be referred to a "Pound" Land. Here in Welling (yes I know but got a 125sqm Victorian terrace with a 90-foot garden and 4-minute walk to the station where's it's 24 minutes to London Bridge for about 30% of the ED price) and where smashed avocado is as rare as rocking horse shit our Poundland shut down and has been replaced with a gym.Go figure - miss Franklin's though - old skool brilliance. malumbu
Difficulty is whether it be Poundland or other retailers people buy the plastic tat. You could widen the argument that we are very wasteful. That is an issue for society. You could just as well blame us as consumers Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/314272-foxtons-on-lordship-lane-soon-to-become-a-poundland-local/page/12/#findComment-1617802 Share on other sites
jazzer
Blame all the supermarkets who sell fruit and veg in plastic bags which is cheaper than fruit and veg in their natural skins, madness!!!!!!! Loutwo
I only ever buy bananas from a greengrocer which is nearly always cheaper than a supermarket, and usually comes in a brown paper bag. Louisa. malumbu
So again blame consumers, apart from Louise, for buying product in unnecessary plastic bags. Ebenezer
I wonder if the self identified working class heroes who have benefited from the gentrification of ED through the skyrocketing property prices (and who are boasting in forums) understand that many of the younger generation of "yuppies" and other speciality coffee drinkers are also struggling financially with high expenses like insane rents and childcare costs...While some may find Monster Munch and Pot Noodles to be enjoyable dinner options, I personally would prefer to have access to fresh and affordable food. Loutwo
First world problems or what? Maybe these ‘struggling’ middle class people should consider a move somewhere more affordable then? Or perhaps, reconsider their life choices on food. Seems bizarre to me that so many plum in the mouth, big spending yuppies can afford an independent coffee shop, but turn their nose up at a pound shop. I guess that’s what sums them up though isn’t it? Wannabes. If they’re genuinely struggling with rent and bills, perhaps they could force themselves to shop somewhere that’s ‘below’ their inflated ego, more in line with their ailing disposable income. Problem solved. Or move somewhere more affordable perhaps? Louisa. malumbu
Thinking of starting a cointer-thradIs it really that much for a croissant and coffee in Gail's. I'll have to sell a kidney. Invest in some instant Nescafé granules if you’re struggling that much. Then you can get one of the hula hoops multi packs too. Jules-and-Boo
I find it particularly offensive (yes - I am offended) by the number of people who still buy coffee in disposable cups - they do not bio degrade and disappear just because you can no longer see them once you've put them in the bin.Just buy a nice reusable one - from Poundland!!!! - and literally do the world a favour.
