Penguin68
A discussion on the targeting Poundland may be choosing, and the relevance of its offer to the store catchment area seems perfectly reasonable,; ad hominem attacks on different social classes (as perceived by different individuals) less so.Perhaps it is time for the thread to be either lounged or ended? At the least, let's wait awhile until the offer has settled down to comment on whether the shop now brings benefits, or not, to those frequenting LL and ED. Loutwo
And this response exemplifies my point about pretentious yuppies. Rather have a coffee than a multi pack of hula hoops. May I make a suggestion to any yuppies reading this? Invest in some instant Nescafé granules if you’re struggling that much. Then you can get one of the hula hoops multi packs too. Can afford an expensive coffee and then moans about mortgages, child care costs and rents. Hilarious, so full of self importance. Louisa. Ugh. Same old same old.Can we relegate Louisa to the Lounge again please Admin. She was allowed back if she didn't just regurgitate the same, stale vitriol. She's like Wolfie Smith but without the wit or self awareness. Agreed. It's been going on ad nauseam for years. She once announced she was leaving and never coming back. But no. She saw an opportunity to have another go at the people living in this area who she appears to hate so much. Oh I do have to laugh. Boomers suggesting that cutting out expensive coffee and avocado toast will solve financial struggles is such a laughable cliché... Post Generation X suggesting that paying the mortgage is a struggle but they wont cut back on posh coffee and five star dining. People of my generation barely ate out when we were younger. I certainly cut back when I needed to, paying the bills was always a priority. Clearly priorities are different with certain socio economic classes. If you’ve never struggled, you’d never know how to survive on a budget. Hence why, not cutting back on the fancy stuff comes as the norm to these people. Louisa. jazzer
Coffee being a supposed luxury is laughable, make it yourself at home.We all have a choice where we shop, what I see is people with more money than sense sitting in coffee shops and paying exorbitant prices for the pleasure. We're in the midst of a cost of living crisis, surely what you need surpasses what you want, unless of course you're trying to keep up with the "Jones's"Totally agree with Louisa's sentiment, and I'm more than happy that Louisa continues to have access to all the options on the forum we all have, Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/314272-foxtons-on-lordship-lane-soon-to-become-a-poundland-local/page/13/#findComment-1617892 Share on other sites

malumbu
This thread, and the one on the recent protest at the Crystal Palace Tavern remind me of the glory days of the Lounge when we'd have good natured, and sometimes not so good natured debate. Sadly the Lounge is very quiet nowadays and not sure where the characters have all gone - even Lou would find it hard to pick a battle . It's probably quite natural for posts to go off at a tangent, but respect to admin for explaining ground rules. I've had many a laugh at the expense of what I see as the typical East Dulwich stereotype but hope that for most it is just a bit of banter, and I can take the mickey out of myself. When it does get vitriolic it tends to backfire, although it may be hurtful and a difficult line to tread in terms of intervention/censorship. I left a previous forum as some smart arse who had worked out who I was made some comments relating to our then young children, it wasn't intended to be personal but it was unnecessary. Now I've gone totally off thread! Pugwash
I too wandered into Poundland earlier this week out of curiosity.Spent £5.25p. and paid cash. Bit of a mix up as due to long queues I was directed to the 2 male cashiers, and presented my £10 note- horror from staff member - I can only take card payment, Another staff member was called over why did I go to cashier when should have gone to self serve? Explained that she herself had directed me to the available assistant, Manager called - whilst waiting for him/her suggested that they should have a big notice above till saying 'card only'. Manager arrives - could not see the problem- tells assistant that he had cash in the till to give me change. Manager apologies to me.Purchased zinc batteries which had been looking for in other local shops, some cat food, also 24 jaffa cakes (£1). Will still use Farmers for household items but nice to have an alternative. Bic Basher
I popped in there today as well. Some decent deals including Tetley One Cup tea bags (72) for £1 as well as the infamous batteries. In all honesty, I don't think Farmers has anything to worry about when it comes to getting cleaning products, but the food products are reasonably priced. In fact, I spent £1 more for jacket potatoes in the Co-op which were also in Poundland Local. They also have a Pound Bakery section, but the bread was already sold out, only leaving a few cakes such as jam doughnuts. monica
Next time im in Poundland, I will record my conversations with the staff, jeez, you are definitely a contender for something not very nice. there were a few people who thought abusing the staff verbally was going to encourage pound land to close.Early contender for Didn't Happen Of The Year Award (EDF section). Earl Aelfheah
Farmers is great. Really hope Poundland doesn't drive it out. If they that great they will have no problems This is quite a naïve / idealistic view of contemporary capitalism imo. Chains can afford to drop prices short term, put independents under, and then raise them again, or use loss leaders or BOGOFF offers to entice shoppers. All of these tactics may lead to success, without necessarily translating into better overall value or service. Big marketing budgets (and subsequent brand recognition) often means people will favour places like Poundland regardless of how 'good' they actually are. malumbu
Consumer law takes into account expectations of quality, if you buy a Fiat Panda don't expect the quality of a Rolls Royce Phantom. That said my one dealing with Poundland over poor quality bird food (they'd switched suppliers to keep to the magic one pound) was swift, and a token quickly came in the post. I didn't rant in my on line complaint but explained the previous product was great and the replacement not, encouraging them to switch back.It reminds me of being at college many moons ago and a flat mate was dead excited about his budget burgers, that fell through the grill pan disintegrating when cooking. Loutwo
I don’t think Farmers will be affected by Poundland. I love Farmers, it’s been around forever, I remember it when I was young. It sells unique cleaning products other places cannot or will not stock. I think if anything, Poundland will create more competition for the other big chains. Louisa.
