If you are quoted a price per hour, and a job is finished in less than an hour, would you expect to pay the relevant proportion of that rate or pay for an hour?

And, what if a job takes say 1.25 hours? Would you pay the rate x 1.25 or pay for 2 hours? This is with the assumption you haven't been told there is a minimum charge.

I don't like cross examining someone, particularly if I'm hoping to get them to do a job for me.

Example number one-of course pay for the full hour.

Example number 2-negotiate with tradesperson but be prepared to pay for 2 hours

I would agree that pay the full hourly rate (like a 'call out' fee) of job is less than an hour. Although....for what sounds like quite a small job, I would think it reasonable and preferable (for both parties) to agree on a flat fee for the job.

I dont think it would be odd to ask if thats possible...

I don't think asking how someone charges is "cross examining"?

Far better to find out in advance, surely?

I've was given an hourly rate Sue, and told the job should be done within the hour.

By cross examining I mean asking what the price would be in different scenarios. It takes an hour and 5 minutes or a power cut mid job. That type of thing.
