Fancying a nice Veg juice post gym the other day I stupidly thought I'd pop into Joe and the Juice and get one.

I expected to pay about £4 which even in Central London is the going rate for a fresh juice.

I ordered the simplest juice nothing fancy, not a smoothie not added 'shots' of this or that.

I went to pay it was over £7!!!

Something like £7.30..I asked the young lady behind the counter to repeat the price.

I honestly thought she'd made a mistake.

Nope a simple 2 ingredient juice over £7.

I said "nope sorry not paying that.." went to Blue Brick and got a decent juice for almost half the price.

Who on earth willingly pays these prices??

I dont usually moan about the cost of things but Joe and the Juice is a blatant rip off !

I regularly get my lunch in the west end and have never bothered to go in "joe and the Juice'

This was the first and last time.

I wonder how long they will last in this location?

A family of 4 would pay almost £30 for juices alone...Mindblowing!

Juicing is a silly fad anyway. You're basically just main-lining sugar. If you want to feel healthy and save money, make yourself a salad. Otherwise, you're just paying £7 for a massive glucose spike.

Or eat whole fruits.

At least then you get the fibre.

Assuming they aren't giving you the pulp as well in their juices

Why rant here, you voted with your feet.

Have you seen the price of cakes and coffee in the village... 🙂

Always surprised how few people check their bar bill, was shocked on a rare visit to the Dulwich Woodhouse. Well that plastic grass costs money to maintain. See what you have started? Fortunately there is a rant thread on the Lounge

Can't deny that I love a good juice. It's a treat though, and a healthier choice than a Coke or a "juice drink" with added sugar and additives.

But what niggles me is juices that are mainly apple or grape in spite of their name - Joe & the Juice used to do a berry juice with ingredients listed as strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, etc., but the majority of the base was apple. Even Tropicana's Orange & Raspberry juice is 40% apple, despite it not being in the name.

Just thought I'd add to the juice rant.

Out of curiosity, did you not see the menu with the prices before you ordered?

I did...But here its mis-leading.

On the board they have listed the option of a juice with 2 ingredients (I think I wanted 2 vegetables because as a rule I dont like sweet drinks..) no additions and from memory that was around £4.50.

I do eat Fruit but I must admit I do love a green juice (hate fruity juices) with Kale, Spinach, apple and cucumber I make them at home myself in my juicer but this was one of those hot days when I just really really craved a quick veg juice hit without stopping and buying the stuff and doing it myself.

So how come yours was so much more than the price quoted?

Did they add gold glitter to it?!

Yes...That was what I couldn't work out..

I really didn't hang around to quibble Or point out the quoted price for that juice on the board(she hadn't started to make the juice yet)

I questioned the cost and the girl serving said "oh, hang on a moment..." looked at the till and then told me the price quoted was correct.

I honestly dont think I was imagining the lower price of that particular juice as to be totally honest it wasn't the one that appealed to me the most I only ordered it because it was the cheapest in theory!

Edited to add:

I just looked at their menu..I think it was the apple ice mint and ginger I asked for In a small

its quoted on their menu as £6.30

I thought it was less but either way I was quoted £1 more and I wasn't even drinking it inside.

Still seem like rip off prices for something so basic.

Or maybe I'm just old and out of touch.

Quite partial to a Joe & the Juice in the past. I visited the ED branch recently, they made way too much & tipped the rest down the sink. Maybe if they had less waste, they could drop their prices, oh and speed up their service, it is so slow.

I've been going to Vits & Kicks lately.

That's absolutely appalling.

Surely they must have some kind of portion control before they start making the thing?

Surely that's a basic starting point for anybody selling food?

It's wasteful of both food and money. No wonder their prices are so high.

And if the person who made it was new, then they are not training their staff properly.

I want to try Vits and kicks..Went past the other day and checked the menu outside but all I could see was food on the menu and cocktails, I must go in and actually ask the veg juice offerings AND check the price!

Missed opportunity to support a small, local, indie business.

Vits + Kicks "Captain K" would have cost you £5.50 { 6 ingredients: Kale, Spinach, Cucumber, Apple, Celery, Ginger }.

    • On the matter of gender, raised early in the thread There were a couple of male tailors in the area, first generation Carribbean, I think there was a time when many emigrated with these skills  Go back 60 years and you may have had a suit made by a Jewish male tailer in the East End  Not sure if it is common to have males in this field of work nowadays although I expect Saville Row is still male dominated.
    • I was at Brockwell Park greenhouses very recently, they don't have any plants for sale which are suitable for my purpose (though that's not why I went there). I'd be very surprised if the Marsden Road place did either, as I need a fairly large prickly shrub! Thanks, I used the term nursery a bit too loosely, sorry. I did mean including garden centres. Your post is useful, thanks.  I'm not looking for anything unusual though, just a prickly shrub to deter cats! Much as I love unusual plants, I only have a very small garden. Many of my plants (some unusual and some I had had for years) have disappeared due to wood  pigeons trampling everything under my bird feeders in their quest to eat anything edible dropped by smaller birds using the feeders 😭
    • If you mean proper nurseries where they grow plants and not just garden centres there are several on Woodmansterne Lane just south of Wallington. I prefer going there as you get a lot of plants you don't see in garden centres. The two I go to most often are Flittons https://www.flittons.com/ and Barnes https://www.barnesnurseries.co.uk/. There are a few others on the same road and a large Dobbies if you want a garden centre that sells other things.
    • Went to Nunhead Gardener this week.  Very good selection of healthy plants, indoor and out.
