Lets not turn this into a race issue please. I'm equally dissatisfied with the number of estate agents on LL, but as you say if the demand is there then they will open up! I was just hoping for some diversity in the shopping experience, and how many of the same thing does one high street need? There's no excuse for ANY high street to be untidy, surely everyone can agree that a shopping experience without having to avoid littered pavements is a good thing?

Louisa.

Rye Lane has not one estate agent, coffee shop or curry house (someone correct me if I'm wrong), and it is a retail space at least twice the length and girth of Lordship Lane. Equally, LL does not have one signal hair extension shop or exotic food store (someone correct me if I'm wrong). *Bob* I think you could be onto something here. We could have a pop-up exchange store event.

Louisa.

It will take more than a few cosmetic changes to an area like Peckham Rye to erase the t,v images of the riots that took place there and the shootings and undiserable gatherings of hoodie youths on bikes, intimidating anyonewalking by.

The culture that has developed there was part of the reason why the likes of Jones and Higgins, B.H.S, and other popular stores that were there since the nineteenth century have moved away.

The whole area was downgraded by shoplifters and bad customers who liked and still do ,being confrontational.

No one wants their bussiness,s in low grade areas like that.

Deptford and Lewisham went the same way, and Croydon is catching up.

They all could have been good if the councils had.nt allowed too manny low lifes to congregate in one area.

thats why know wants to live, shop, or buy homes in areas like that.

Get real, people its a ghetto slum. Pull it down.

LL has a few salons. I'm sure you could get extensions if you wanted. White people wear extensions too!

This exchange was suggested at the very start of this thread

Perhaps the residents of Ed with the perhaps backing of Cllr Barber could extend the hand of friendship and and put in place a relocation plan that makes sure all those displaced would be offered any empty shops on LL at affordable rents

Why should Peckham have all these wonderful businesses

LL does lack Nailshops. hair extension shops opened fronted meat and fish shops and masses of rubbish.

This could turn LL in a shopping destination

Peckham residents need better.

Hi pexprincess - it's contained in this document: http://moderngov.southwark.gov.uk/documents/s37260/Appendix%20D%20Copy%20of%20conciliation%20statement.pdf

There's a coffee shop/caff at the Southern end on the western side. There's a delicious pizza/coffee place inside the indoor market and I am not sure that's the only one in there. There's a coffee/snack bar in the covered passageway in front of the station between the dentists and the veggie stall. There may be more.

The new Greggs seems to have a space to drink coffee.

Someone was arguing in there when I walked past :(

Ozzies would give you a coffee too.

But none of the ones we're used to ... and I like a coffee.

The Council's own Overview Scrutiny Committee decided that there were issues which needed to be probed before the Cabinet decision was implemented. The Scrutiny meeting will take place this coming TUESDAY 7th MAY 6-7pm at Council HQ 160 Tooley Street.

The Scrutiny Committee paper summarising the issue is here: http://goo.gl/NQowI

It is item 5 on the agenda (see http://goo.gl/od49J), and will start near 6pm.

Councillor Fiona Colley in charge of the station regeneration project will be speaking, and Peckham Vision and other enterprises on the site will also have a voice. This is open to the public, and we will welcome support. It will be of interest to all who support the creative enterprises and independence of Peckham's local economy, and the need for a supportive nurturing approach to organic economic change.

So, twitter has just told me that the Peckham Refreshment Rooms are opening this Friday. Their (rather spartan) website has a menu, which looks tasty in a sort of tapas-y way.

http://peckhamrefreshment.com/

Mrs A and I will be popping in for sure.

(I've no affiliation other than living locally, btw).

Ooh, great news - didn't expect it to be that quick! I can't wait to check it out :)

By the way, this is the latest news from Peckham Vision regarding the station square...

Peckham Vision

May 10

At the Scrutiny meeting, the Council said they were not intending to acquire ALL interests, just as they were not intending to seek all vacant possession. They now have to come back to Cabinet to report on what they will be aiming to do so there will be a public chance to look at that, if they tell us they are doing it. So continued vigilance is needed. Meanwhile, the fright has strengthened the links that had already formed between enterprises on the site, including with Peckham Vision. Come to the Goose Green Fair on Sunday 12th May 11am-4pm to see our information displays, and discuss the issues.

Isn't 'reporting back to cabinet at the earliest opportunity' what they were going to do anyway,

So the committee was not unduly concerned so far ?? or don't I understand :)

The "CLFArtCafe" at the Bussey building near the station is a great place

Soul train one of their nights is brilliant

They also have the royal court theatre on the second floor who host plays

The standard in Peckham is being risen the council is getting in there and changing the face of Peckham - which is exciting

    • Whilst I agree, I have been thinking about this recently in relation to some of the other posts on here about anti social behaviour. We are all products of our upbringing - our experiences at home, school and beyond - plus whatever we have inherited genetically which might affect our behaviour (the nature/nurture thing). So in this case, if people haven't been brought up to love and appreciate trees and other wild things, plus as you say they may be deeply unhappy (or have other undiagnosed issues) it's easy to see how they could have ended up doing this. Also, it's possible they had quite low intelligence and didn't really grasp what they were doing and the effect it would have on so many other people. But that's just surmise and possibly completely wrong. From what I've read about it, they seemed to be two mates egging each other on, like two big kids. I'm not for a minute excusing what they did, and it's right they should be punished, but I really hope they might get some sort of rehabilitation in prison (it would  be appropriate to have them do some kind of community service like planting saplings, wouldn't it, or working in woodland conservation). And the same goes for phone robbers and shoplifters (rehabilitation, not planting saplings), though for SOME  shoplifters there might also be other issues at play, not excluding poverty. Sorry Jasonlondon,  I've gone off at a real tangent here, lucky it's in the lounge! Oh oops I've just noticed it isn't. Sorry admin. Oh, and then there's a whole philosophical discussion to be had about free will and determinism ..... 🤣🤣🤣
    • Thanks! I'll find out in a few weeks when I get the results! It was one of those disconcerting things where a disembodied voice keeps booming  at you to breathe in and hold it, then breathe normally. Apart from that it was OK, all completely painless. I imagine there will be quite a few people going from ED, though I presume it covers the whole Southwark area
    • Two men behind ‘senseless’ felling of Sycamore Gap tree jailed for more than four years Good to see these two jailed today for four years. There’s something deeply disturbing about people who destroy trees—any tree. Whether it’s a centuries-old landmark or a sapling in a quiet park, trees are living beings that offer beauty, shade, and life. The men who cut down the Sycamore Gap tree are a stark example of how far some people will go to lash out at something peaceful and meaningful. People who harm nature like this aren’t just destructive—they are often deeply unhappy. It takes a troubled mind to look at a tree and see something to ruin instead of something to protect.
