Barclays Bank East Dulwich closing

Barclays Bank East Dulwich will be closing as from 12:00 pm Friday 2nd December.

This is terrible news. When I first moved to East Dulwich in 1980 this branch used

to open on a Saturday and provided a good service.

The service here has been eroded over recent years.

Alternative Barclays sevices will now be available in Peckham and Brixton.

Unfortunately for those who don't, most people use online banking these days, and more and more banks now mainly or solely use apps.

So the banks can't really keep branches open for fewer and fewer customers.

I agree it can be a pain, but as pointed out on another thread, you can use the Post Office for paying in cash or cheques.

Things change in over forty years! 🙂

One bug bear when banks close is that they tend to remove their cash points at the same time resulting in it harder to get cash without resorting to a "pay to withdraw" machine

Banks seem to be driving the use of contactless by removing the cash points citing more people are using contactless (but not always by choice)

No, not if they want to keep up their massive profits and bankers bonuses!!!!

Every time I go in to Barclays to use a service that can only be done at the counter, (because the machines don't have the capability) there is always a long queue of people also waiting for services that can only be done at the counter.

The closure of the last bank in East Dulwich is an absolute scandal and, be in no doubt, is done to maximise bank profits. Many of these bank buildings remain empty for a long time as they are difficult and expensive to convert to other uses. The departing banks should be made to provide funds to regenerate the buildings they leave empty and unused.

Oops! This bit of the reply was mine. Only quoted the first sentence above from Sue!

Yes I copied it to general issues because I think it's a very important issue and think it will get more coverage than in ED businesses.

Not sure what can be done but I think it's another nail in the coffin of the high street and shoes a complete disregard for the needs of customers v the aim of banks to maximise profits. There are many things that can still only be done at a bank counter.

    • Although this sounds worrying, a "bitey" fox is unusual. I see foxes all the time where I live near Rye Lane and have never experienced this. I've even seen a fox sitting in the garden where an outdoor cat lives, whilst the cat was there - the cat was fine and is still alive. I think my flat is on a fox path because I hear and see them most nights, none of the local cats seem bothered by them. I can't help but wonder what would make the fox act in such a way, I've just read that toxoplasmosis might make them more aggressive
    • Purse with cash and cards (including photo card) found in road local to East Dulwich Tabernacle. It will be here (107 Barry Road) all day (Sunday 21 December) if you want to collect or PM me.  In case some one else who knows R Howard, please alert her.    Thank you
    • Thanks Sue.  No the car just drove on.  We don't know if they noticed.  We were driving behind.  We were just glad we could be with the cat, and take him to the vet, rather than leaving him there 😞
    • Certainly the infamous (and mythical) SE London cat killer turned out to be foxes attacking dying and dead cats injured by cars, but fox: cat encounters do appear to happen, even where cats are victorious. Fox: adult humans less so. At least where foxes are the aggressors.
