Ant
Menzies = Ming because the z isn't really one. It's a bastardisation of a now-lost letter that had the ng sound. Not sure on sinjun though. Or Featherstonehaugh (Fanshaw) for that matter. Here's one that me and the mrs can't settle: CLEMatis (my preferred one) or clem-AE-tis (hers)? mockney piers
For years I read tousled as tussled not as in tow(rhyming with cow)zled. When I first heard it spoken I was very embarrassed for myself. david_carnell
Hyperbole. Hi-per-bol-ee or hyper-bol?Homogenous - Hom-odj-eh-nous or homo-ge-nous?The one that is making my blood boil at the moment is Paula Abdul on American Idol (don't ask) repeatedly referring to niche as nitch. Ted Max
Nitch is horrible, but interestingly could come in your category of "I don't care how the foreigners pronounce it I'm going to say it my way". I'd go for HiPERbolay and HomODGenous.REE-search is almost ubiquitous now, but not in Ted Max towers. Oh no. SimonM
>>And your point is caller ?<<Well I suppose my point is that the removal of one of the "i"s means that we are talking about two different words, rather than differing pronunciation of the same word :)) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/3020-pronunciation-guide/page/4/#findComment-94075 Share on other sites
char1ie
I've been having a little trouble recently with:Tsaoische (sp?) - the boss of Ireland. I see it written all the time but how do you pronounce it!Beatific - Be Ah tific? Not Beetific. Eh? Why?Religious thingy - Diocese. How is this one supposed to sound? And hyperbole - that's an annoying pronunciation.Oh, and Beijing in Cantonese is "Bah Ging" and in Mandarin "Bay Jing/tsing". In English I'm sure that either Zj or J pronunciation is cool. Current pet hate is leverage with lever rhyming with trevor. It is LEEEver! Oh and Process rhyming with crosses. It is PrOHcess! It's American business speak leaking into my office.CharlieCharlie Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/3020-pronunciation-guide/page/4/#findComment-94083 Share on other sites
