I guess it would depend on where they re-routed all the buses to.

I think it's too late to reinvigorate Oxford Street. It is all becoming like the Tottenham Court Road end always was - full of tourist shops selling cheap rubbish, and huge bizarre candy shops.

And chains which just sell the same (boring) stuff you can get in their branches elsewhere.

I hope I'm wrong, but like I suspect many people I now do almost all my shopping online (the downside of that obviously being the items sent via Royal Mail which never arrive .....).

If there were more quirky independent shops, like in some other nearby areas, and more appealing places to eat, that might help, but I guess they couldn't afford the rents.

The issue with pedestrianisation of Oxford street is that currently people with limited mobility use buses and taxis to traverse it's length.

Remove vehicles and you will make it less accessible as its a long street so shoppers with mobility issues will go elsewhere.

Whilst you can argue that one or two shoppers going elsewhere isn't a big deal, they often come with family, carers or friends so the loss of shoppers increases.

On top of that many bus routes don't terminate on or near Oxford Street, but go through it to get to other destinations so they will need to be rerouted to bypass any closures.

A good example of both effects was the recent closure of Rye Lane where bus journeys took longer and businesses claim they suffered a fall in sales.

So the issue of closing to traffic isn't bad simple as it looks.

I haven't received a Private Eye for months. I took out a new subscription and received precisely one copy. I never received the free Christmas cards, either 🙄

Alexander Bowen started this petition to Westminster Council

Constructed in May 2021, at a cost of ?6mn, the Marble Arch Mound has since become an icon to Londoners and tourists alike. The aim of this petition is to ask Westminster City Council to extend its lifespan beyond the proposed 9th of January dismantlement date. This icon of modern London and celebration of life during the Covid deconfinement period should be preserved and the many happy memories people have enjoyed on it should continue to take place. The Mound is both a piece of art and a piece of community - it must not be cut down in its prime especially in light of the money and joy already invested into it. Our message is simple - #SaveTheMound

"Leighton Giles?2 days ago

This is a wonderful example of not what to do and must serve as a remembrance to things so bad they?re good. Long live the Mound"

I agree with this and suggest the Mound should be renamed the "Vison Board Dumbshit Spending Other People's Money Memorial". The Council could have paid for dozens of social workers or teachers or environmental health offices or anything else...
