I have never really got on with Freemind. I don't like the way that it lays out the nodes completely at its whim. So you add another node and things move over to the left hand side.

I have tried a trial version of Inspiration (which is quite expensive). This is better in that you can choose the layout yourself.

I'm going to try Freemind while I see if I can wangle Mindjet through work which could.. scratch that... WILL take forever.
