adam16
Have been in your position so sympathise! I came out of a restaurant to find someone had deliberately keyed my car the entire length and I had only had it 2 months or so. The repair cost was ?5000. Toby
Yes exactly, can only assume the driver was unaware of what happened. Thanks for all the sensible comments, in the past I had wing mirror knocked off and posted, the driver got in contact and we sorted things out amicably. RoundTable
Legally if you have an accident you are required to stop and give your details. By definition, the driver crashed into you, so in effect they have done a runner. The way to resolve this is to report it to the police. There is a dedicated portal for car accidents (Google it). You will be able to explain in the form what happened. You will get a reference number. With that number the CCCTV company should be compelled to release the data. If they don?t, then you will be able to let the police know, either at the time of reporting it or after. The police will decide if they will carry on investigating it.They may, or they may not.I know this because it happened to me. Luckily I was able to capture the number plate, but I went through the process if reporting it to the police, because legally that?s what should happen, I believe. RoundTable
What I mean to say is that the CCCTV may not release the footage to you, but they are legally obliged to release it to the police if they ask for it. Whether the police will request it, that?s a separate conversation.CCCTV footage does work, but there is a legal process for obtaining it, which must be followed. exdulwicher
How long would the CCTV recording be kept for?CCTV footage is subject to GDPR but the Regulation just says that footage should be kept "as long as necessary" which in practice means about a month is "standard". As it's under GDPR, you're allowed to request footage of yourself:https://www.gov.uk/request-cctv-footage-of-yourself.Of course, that doesn't necessarily extend to footage of an identifiable vehicle although technically, the vehicle doesn't identify the individual. As you'll know the date and time you were in the car park, it should be a relatively trivial matter to find that footage, it's not like there's days worth of video to go through. malumbu
To go back to my original question - what was the reason for the posting?(a) sympathy(b) sympathy, indignation© letting off steam(d) Advice on how to get hold of the details of the other car/driverYou seem to have got all of these.I'm not sure how bad the damage was, but dents, dings and scratches are fairly common when parking in super markets and similar places. I recommend getting a car that already has these so then you will not be too worried about parking. Penguin68
Legally if you have an accident you are required to stop and give your details. This is true about accidents on the Public Highway - I am not sure it is about accidents on private property - which the car park is. Most motoring legislation refers only to what happens 'in public'. As an absurd example, imagine having to stop and exchange details for a prang at Silverstone. Peckhamgatecrasher
@JohnLI was working at Sainsbury's before Christmas and received - and am still receiving - charges for parking legitimately at 4am - 8am. Charges being applied by Euro Car Parks.Fortunately S. are dealing with fines. Your statement about getting an old banger so as to it be upset over small scratches, is absurd. Toby
Thanks for all the messages, it is an old car, but quite a nice one hence being annoyed about it, however would rather hang onto my no claims bonus than claim. Its an odd place the ED forum, but can be very useful.
