El Pibe
Totally agree on TJ's summation of Gervais, but would add I quite enjoyed Life's Too Short. It was the same wwell trodden car crash formula, but 'Warren' Davies was brilliant at sending himself up! TillieTrotter
Daniel Kitson makes my sides ache. Although the last time I saw him live he was having a really bad evening. Atticus
Stewart Lee would have us believe that if we don't 'get' him, we're just too thick. He's made a career out of sniping at others' success. He dismisses this much logged criticism as one which simply misunderstands him. Think he regards himself some kind of anti-comedian. Morrisey meets comedy, if you will. WorkingMummy
He certainly looks a bit like Morrisey.Still think Jim Jeffries is way superior.Saw a clip of him being heckled at Edinburgh. Bloke shouted, "I've seen better than this." "Course you've seen better you thick [c word]. I've seen better. I watched a Richard Pryor video the other night and I was [f'ing] depressed."Which reminds me that I must get hold of some Pryor as I really don't know him at all. maxxi
One of the best heckle put-downs I heard was from a female Aussie comedian. Being given a hard time by a couple of drunken lads one shouted "Suck my Cock!" and she replied "Mate, I wouldn't suck your cock if I was drowning and your bollocks were full of oxygen!" Otta
My favourite heckle response was an old jack Dee one back when he was doing the John Smith's TV ads. Someone shouted "where's your ladybird", and he said "she's in the dressing room. Why, where's your self respect?". Your act?"I also was present with someone of robust views when Lee Hurst said "is there anyone in this room who actually voted Tory?" (about '93) and this bloke says "Me", Lee Hurst says "Why?" and this fella says "Cos they didn't have a BNP candidate in my constituency"...nice atmosphere..i *think* he was joking Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/29991-comediens-we-loath-and-love-starting-with-ricky-gervais/page/5/#findComment-625838 Share on other sites
youandiaredominoes
I like Stewart Lee. There I said it.Not everyone's cup of tea with people saying he is smug and doesn't tell jokes. Partly true, however, I enjoy the way he goads the audience (myself included) and breaks down the fourth wall of stand up. He is kind of a throwback to the alternative comedy scene of the 80s, so is different to all the Russell comedians of today. I would recommend to anyone his recent books - a transcript of stand up shows which are heavily annotated and really interesting.I like Richard Ayoade and Matt Holness' Darkplace - that was genius. I'm also a big fan of Larry David's Curb but I am aware of its recycled format. Ok, now for the comedians I don't appreciate: Miranda Hart, Jimmy Carr, Frank Skinner, On the Gervais argument, I liked The Office as many people did. But I think the general perception is he got too full of himself and it was more about him boasting about how great and successful he was and this put a lot of people off. I don't especially like Derek, Extras was ok and whilst the podcasts are good in places - it kind of felt like he was bullying Karl Pilkington... Huguenot
Don't all stand up comedians break down the fourth wall? Are there any that don't directly address the audience?I quite like the idea of a stand up comedian who acts as if there is no-one else in the room, performing to the voices in his/her head.... :) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/29991-comediens-we-loath-and-love-starting-with-ricky-gervais/page/5/#findComment-626113 Share on other sites

KidKruger
I saw the Rick Gervais programme about an old peoples' home recently for the first time, although I don't find it that 'funny' it IS cringeworthy in a comedic kind of way, it does focus on sentimental aspects and banality of life for workers / staff and relationships between them in that environment and I find that interesting in a fashion (not the fact that it's a retirment home per se, there HAS to be some stting though, right). The observations it makes and the behaviours / awkwardness acted-out were sort of intruiging.
