I jest partlybut yer keano/glens have gone v quiet as well(although I do maintain that liberal London has done as much over the years to legitimise Johnson - by voting the arsehole in twice as mayor - than any number of newspaper articles/supportive media groups. Sephiroth
well, OBVIOUSLY that's true. But it has been true for the 18 years of the forum's existence and it has never stopped any of wanging on and spending time on here when we have better things to doBut it is still noteworthy how despite constant back and forth since 2016, now that the charlatan is finally being exposed and judged, despite radio stations being full of apoplectic tory voters, this forum, this place where so many of us lock heads so often has basically given up on the very notionOf course we have better things to do (as one would hope). But it's still notable Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/299494-defending-the-indefensible-another-pm-thread/page/4/#findComment-1559919 Share on other sites
diable rouge
Ironically, this thread started out questioning Johnson defending Allegra Stratton, hence the title ''defending the indefensible''.The virtual no-show from Boris' fan boys/girls shows that even they can't defend him this time, and I would've thought reason for optimism that hopefully* the penny has finally dropped for some.*I realise that hopefully is doing a lot of heavy lifting here... keano77
I suspect most reasonable people see this latest hubbub for what is is - just the latest chapter in a Westminster bubble media inspired anti-Boris attack whipping gullible people up into a frenzy. (Remember how malign forces spent weeks trying to whip up interest in ?wallpaper gate? and 99% of the British people didn?t give a damn)Sure, Boris is no angel and it appears he?s been a bit naughty during lockdown. On the other hand a good number of people in this country are alive because of a speedy vaccine roll-out and have been saved from poverty and eviction from their properties thanks to furlough payments and other pandemic measures. The scales would seem to be tipped in his favour. My usual warning is ?be careful what you wish for? Sephiroth
well I wouldn't bracket you in the "reasonable person" category AND opinion polls and radio shows disagree with you mightily as wellMore people have DIED in the UK because of his policies compared to other European countries - why would you claim he has done well on this measure? The initial rollout was speedy but other countries caught up and overtook UK pretty quickly (with much higher vaccination rates to boot)furlough isn't some magical Tory policy but has been enacted across many countries (and would have been under a Labour govt as well)But you just call him a naughty boy? JohnL
This one has actually hit home if you believe the polls.it's not so much a surge for labour as a lot of people moving from Tory to Not Voting/Don't Know IMHOOf course the test will be the local Elections in May Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/299494-defending-the-indefensible-another-pm-thread/page/4/#findComment-1559938 Share on other sites
ianr
> The initial rollout was speedy but other> countries caught up and overtook UK pretty> quickly (with much higher vaccination rates> to boot) Is there any mileage in the hypothesis that vaccination uptake rates might be moderately independent of the identity of the ruling party? keano77
?.More people have DIED in the UK because of his policies compared to other European countries - why would you claim he has done well on this measure??Highly debatable. When all this is over (if ever) and there is a review to find the best way to prepare for future pandemics some formula might emerge. At the moment all we know is the pandemic met a world totally unprepared. Different countries have tried different measures to protect their populations and those with the more draconian measures have fared no better than the more liberal policies.Perhaps Sweden?s herd immunity approach will be proved to be the best. Scientists can?t agree and everyone has been making it up as we go along - which is quite understandable. Yes Boris is probably on the ropes, just about to be dropped, but PM's come and go as did Blair, Brown, Cameron, May and contenders as Corbyn. It's politics, a nasty business, but it's why we have elections to determine which administration "leads" the country. What the country Really needs is a decent, strong, questioning opposition that properly holds the current Government to account, makes them squirm and answer the difficult questions. Then we may see a change, but until then, things will pretty much continue as they are. The likes of Starmer and Rayner need to do their job. However, if you want to really moan, then moan about why 150+K people have passed away in the UK, because they were unfortunate enough to have contracted C19, their families and friends who are mourning the loss of those they loved. And no doubt you'll come back with some type of put down. Sephiroth
last time I tried to engage with you jazzer it was to point out you were having a go at people for having a go at the NHS when people were doing no such thing - and you ignored thatnot sure why you are having a pop nowI sure do have a bee in my bonnet and repeatedly complain about this govt (and the people who after 10 years keep voting them in. Yes opposition is important but apart from last Labour leader I don't see why people would have too much problem choosing them over this lot. Other political parties are also available. Handing this fool and 80+ majority is on the voters IMO) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/299494-defending-the-indefensible-another-pm-thread/page/4/#findComment-1559971 Share on other sites
jazzer
Didn't know this was exclusively your thread to lead on???!!!! Put bluntly, Starmer and Rayner need to lead a proper opposition, asking the difficult and hard questions, and prove they are capable of being the Governing Party. After the comical fiasco that was Corbyn & co, what do you expect. Corbyn showed he was incapable of leading the country and led Labour to their fourth consecutive defeat. Until the current leadership can show they are trustworthy, simply - no chance. The only person capable of leading, bringing together and opposing Boris et al is Andy Burnham, who is doing a great job in Manchester, (far better that Khan the clown is here)And as much as I think Boris is done, who else wants to pick up the poison chalice? No previous party in our lifetime has had to deal with a world wide virus that they are doing at the moment. They are making it up as they go along, what else do you expect??
