birnehelene
Hg mould spray from amazon. Contains bleach as well but works incredibly fast. Mrs TP
Also do you have an extractor fan and is it working? Should get rid of some of the damp. WorkingMummy
Extractor seems to be working but don't know how to check really. Room not full of steam after shower so I guess yes. Will try that spray from amazon. tiddles
please note, don't let that mould spray anywhere near anything chrome as it will remove it. otherwise, spray away... skylorikeet
Pretty sure you can get HG products at Plough DIY if you want to support a local shop. Townleygreen
used to suffer from black mould but the answer is to have a fan that stays on long enough to clear the condensation from the air in the room. Perhaps get a fan that has a humistat as well as timer - stays on longer than usual when the humidity is high in there Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/29538-black-spots-on-shower-seal/#findComment-620116 Share on other sites
Chief Jeff
I've been told by colleagues that grapefruit seed extract mixed with water works on black mould...http://autonopedia.org/body_and_home/Natural_Home_Cleaners/Kill_Mould_Naturally.html...though they said that the mould comes back after a year or so and you have to do it again. alieh
It could be that the moisture is coming from behind the seal, in which case no cleaners will shift it. We had this and had to strip it all out and re-seal with a mildew resistant sealant. Worth a try if the other options don't work! vch
We used to have the same problem. Tried straight bleach, but didn't work. So I was worried it was behind the seal. Then sprayed on Dettol Mold & Mildew Remover and it worked like a charm. I'm too scared to see what the ingredients are though. Good luck. WorkingMummy
Thank you. Bleach not working so will try the Dettol. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/29538-black-spots-on-shower-seal/#findComment-620625 Share on other sites
JS33
I had this problem recently and discovered that part of the problem was that the bleach was running off before it could do its work. I ended up soaking bits of cut up cotton pads (we had loads of left over from baby days), in bleach and put it down over the stains for a few hours, which cleared it up. I think it would also work with toilet roll, if you don't have any cotton wool handy. Good luck! cashewnut
I remember reading in a New Scientist Q&A column a long time ago that bleach doesn't kill the fungus, just 'bleaches' it. You need a fungicide to kill it off completely and I assume that's what's in the HG spray. You can also get it from Dulwich DIY on Lordship Lane. nubby'smums
Thanks for the tip Birnehelene - I bought the stuff from Amazon and got great results on my shower. Not so great on the mould on my double glazed windows but will persevere. Bloomin' toxic though - made my face feel sore! minder
Once you've got the black spots and mould there's nothing you can do really but live with it.Bleach doesn't always work but try a bit of soaked in Fairy Liquid. Bellenden Jo
I used the dettol on my,quite frankly, mingling bath seal. Was resigned to ripping it all out and starting again, but this stuff really did the job. Two applications in and I only have a couple of tiny pinpricks left. Thank you for suggesting this, had never heard of it before! WorkingMummy
I can now second vch's recommendation of Dettol Mold & Mildew Remover. Decimated the mould on first application. There's a tiny stubborn patch left in one corner of the shower, but I will reapply in a few days and am sure it will go soon enough. EastyBoy
I have a steam shower from Di Vapor and in it is a device called ozone (I think), and it turns on after the shower session for 15 minutes. This is meant to kill any bacteria in the air, preventing mold. I have noticed that I don't have to clean the shower as often as I usually do, so I put it down to the ozone. It's worth a shot.I have another tiled shower which had mold on the grout in-between the tiles. I scrubbed all the mold off but the grout was still discoloured, so I went to B&Q grout cleaning spray and got a . It cleaned the tiles a little bit but didn't do the job.I ended up putting a bottle of thick bleach in a squirt bottle, putting on some masks, and spraying the grout with this thick bleach. I left it for a number of hours, when I came back I rinsed it with the shower head and the grout was gleaming white; like new. I was a very happy chappy!
