Townleygreen
ratty said: We looked at Beckenham and Penge but found the houses too pokey!Well some are (like all areas) but my mate has a fantastic Victorian semi with 5 double bedrooms and a huge garden (In Beckenham) and Penge has similar (and larger).I don't know where you were looking, Ratty. LondonMix
Ratty probably meant in his budget... It's like everywhere. Barnes and Richmond have very tiny railway cottage style housing that's become very popular alongside the manor houses :) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/29401-want-to-move-to-the-next-east-dulwich/page/2/#findComment-620102 Share on other sites

Twirly
Am in a similar position to the OP. Have lived in ED for almost 15 years, but the flat needs upgrading to a house now I've acquired a husband and we need more space. Would love to stay in ED, but it's just not affordable unfortunately. Not sure that any of the areas around it are either, for what we want (a house with at least 3 bedrooms, as I work from home some of the time now).Out of curiousity, where do the suburbs actually begin? ratty
Well, we have moved! Been in Hayes a week and are loving it. Got a 4 bedroom doer upper for ?310,000. More than twice as big as our old ED house and the garden is 4 times the size! Some cash in the bank to get going too! From driving into London and back each day, I would suggest that the suburbs begin as soon as you leave Beckenham.Schools here are pretty nifty too, although no idea what the waiting lists are like (just about to find out) they have playing fields even in the infants! Loads of parks, some nice local boozers and shops! It's quiet! Very quiet, but when bringing up too small kids that's pretty ideal! The only problem is, the house is so big I get tired walking to my fridge! Alan Medic
Hi ratty, why did you choose Hayes? Was it for work reasons or just the best value for money place you could find that ticked all the boxes? ratty
Definitely not work! My drive in is now at least 90 minutes. (although once the kids' school is changed I will hop on the train and it will be much better). So many reasons why Hayes. We looked at Beckenham and Chislehurst but found the houses in our price bracket were way too small! We wanted somewhere quiet and suburban for the kids to grow up on, somewhere with lots of parks, good schools, but still commutable. The house we have got is 4 bedrooms, all decent size. A massive kitchen, huge dining room and the same size living room as we had in Abbotswood Road. Cost us ?70k less than what we sold our house in Abbotswood for. It needs work. Lot's of it, but we have the cash to do it!Seriously, Hayes is beautiful! Really picturesque and lovely!Wife is also happy that we are so near the Glades! JulieW
Where do you live now ratty ? And why did you leave ? In the same position, ED is too expensive so am looking further afield ! Oily Telly Tyke
Moved to Penge from ED. Swapped a lovely but small 1st floor flat for a victorian house with garden next to two stations. It's brill and really on the up. Huge park, useful high street and little gems in terms of cafes/brewers/pub...and close to Ed or CP if you need all that jazz.
