zephyr
Sorry but it has been like that for years and is fairly obvious. I would probably understand if it was new but it isn't.Then again we all make mistakes - I got caught in Lewisham around Christmas turning right when not allowed 9though the sign was partly obscured by roadworks. SimonM
>>Sorry but it has been like that for years and is fairly obvious. <<I was about to say this too. I think it has been like this around 30 years but perhaps someone else has a more accurate or definitive answer? Carrie
I work right next to this junction - there are no entry signs on the right hand and left hand pavements and a big sign painted on the road saying buses only - they are not trying to disguise the fact that you are not allowed to drive along that section of road!! Asset
It doesn't matter if it's been like that for years if you are new to the area Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/2931-fine-for-enterting-no-entry-zone-in-peckham-lounged/page/2/#findComment-90673 Share on other sites
SeanMacGabhann
part of the Highway Code (or was when I took my test) states that it shouldn't matter if you are in a familiar area or new town - a driver should be alert at all times. If signs change in your local area you can't defend yourself by saying "but that old sign was there for years" Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/2931-fine-for-enterting-no-entry-zone-in-peckham-lounged/page/2/#findComment-90677 Share on other sites
tiddles
yes, I got caught out there as well - and we have lived here for years, but had never had cause to drive down rye lane before.there is a sign, but not huge - we were behind several buses at the lights (yes, should have been a clue), so didn't see sign or the lettering on the road. If the traffic seems to be driving along somewhere with no problems, one tends to (sheepishly) follow!! Asset
Well then, it is irrelevant that it has been like that for years and I claim 10 points Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/2931-fine-for-enterting-no-entry-zone-in-peckham-lounged/page/2/#findComment-90683 Share on other sites

jocelyn
Yeah well I am new to the area and new to driving in London so all this bus lane malarky is taking a bit of getting used to. Out of interest I was on the bus earlier and saw 2 cars ahead of me making the same mistake so maybe it's a bit of a blackspot! spadetownboy
sean og has a point, all you ever hear on this site is people whinging about being fined for this that and the other. im no saint but i dont get fined for dropping fag butts, going through bus lanes, parking on double yellow lines, disabled bays etc. know why, because i dont do it, and thats the crux of the equation dont do it you wont get fined for it, its that simple. SeanMacGabhann
stb... glad we made up after the recent street fightI'm not saying I don't drop litter, speed or drive the wrong way down one way streets. but I am saying if I did I wouldn't claim immunity if caught. and I wouldn't go on a public discussion board to state a claim for some imagined victimhood. don't get me wrong... anyone is within their rights to do so. but why would they? Marmora Man
Driving past the spot today I noticed just how much signage there is along our urban roads. The majority of us, probably, drive on 50% auto pilot following car(s) ahead of us and setting speed accordingly. The working assumption becomes that it's OK to do what's being done by the vehicles in front & alongside us and that the road is the driver's highway and won't be disturbed. There have, I understand, been experiments in Europe where all traffic control measures and signs were removed - with a resultant greater attention being paid by all road users - pedestrian, cyclist, motorist and public transport drivers and a consequent reduction in accident rates.CAn anyone substantiate this? spadetownboy
i read about this not so long ago in the guardian, i believe it was a town either in holland or northern germany where the experiment was carried out and its pretty much as you say, people were forced to concentrate on their driving due to an absence of roadside furniture and it improved road use by all concerned. Mark
as I happened to be on the 63 bus today with a camera here's the junction in question...I think they should make the no entry bit more obvious with a white line, like this... spadetownboy
there are loads of white lines there, they happen to spell bus only, and they have even put one across the centre of the big red circles on poles which must mean something. lozzyloz
Yes we shouldn't disregard the human rights of these people. Southwark traffic works dept have come up with this solution. In addition there will be Wardens posted at 25m intervals ahead of the junction holding placards bearing 'DON"T ENTER THE BUS LANE PRETTY PLEASE WITH SUGAR ON TOP' Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/2931-fine-for-enterting-no-entry-zone-in-peckham-lounged/page/2/#findComment-90895 Share on other sites
