As children we always asked for and got the batter scraps from our local chippy.

Forgot until I saw that. You'd have though we were starving :)

A mate of mine said to try a bag of scraps for 1/2p, he loved them.

I was sick for two days straight.

This always seemed be an urban myth, something your parents or grandparents said they did before the war. I eventually found a chippy that did them a few years ago and they were truly disgusting - and pretty unhealthy too

Fish bits were always on offer at the chippies I knew and loved. They were just the scrappy bits of batter or tiny, crispy chips that were skimmed off the fryers. I think they were free and I never go5 more than a handful.

We had "Klondikes." They were thin slices of potato in batter. Rather nice, actually

"Batter bits" where I grew up. They were free and tasty. And thick slices of potato battered and fried were "scallops" ? delicious!

I first encountered "bits" though when working in newcastle, you could ask for a free sprinkle ... they must have been so unhealthy as they may have been lurking in the frier for quite a while

Scallops are still around in brum . 10p when I went to school. World away from scraps though .. big thick slice of potato fried . Suppose equivalent of fried chicken down here for school kids
