Yesterday I was alerted to a hospital appointment (for yesterday) when I had a call saying they had to move it.

I enquired how they informed me of the original appointment and a letter was sent out 3 weeks ago.

The backlog at the sorting office is now causing knock on effects to a wider group of institutions and people.

What's the solution and how are they going to clear the backlog or is this now the new norm ?

It must depend on the hospital department, but I get texts reminding me of appointments.

I'm more concerned with financial stuff sent in the post. The very late arrival of a bank card earlier in the year caused me all sorts of problems which are still reverberating.

Or delivering recorded mail, which is what our postman did. We've been waiting over a week for post.

He told us during lockdown that they were to prioritise parcels as that's where Royal Mail make their money.

Hi all,

I looked into this a few months back when the problem seemed really acute. I managed to get hold of someone fairly senior in Royal Mail. He initially said that the problem was already resolved, so I sent him a few dozen examples that local residents sent to me. After that, there seemed to be a marked improvement.

I'm sorry to hear that the problem has returned again. I am happy to do the same again.

If you're a Goose Green resident (check here: https://moderngov.southwark.gov.uk/mgFindMember.aspx?) then please email me with details of missed or seriously delayed post. I will pass it on and see what can be done. I'm on [email protected]

Best wishes

James

I am hearing that it's a shortage of staff to sort letters in the DO - so they are concentrating on parcels and registered post. Clearly holidays/ pindemic may be partly to blame, but also a drop-off in recruitment and retention. I'm aware there are also problems of cupidity (allegedly) which may have led to staff being let go.
Me too - in East Dulwich Grove. I am expecting 4 items which were posted first class well over a week ago, not signed for, all of which are of a size to be put through my letter box and are no heavier than a large letter. I have had one or two ordinary letters in the last 10 days, but most days I don?t even get them. I am going to have to stop ordering anything that will be posted only by Royal Mail.

You should definitely report the missing money to Royal Mail. They will be able to track who has handled the card at this end (or they should be able to).

However, don't expect any compensation, because they will just tell you money shouldn't be sent in the ordinary post (which is true).

so obviously Royal Mail Management did not think it a good idea to put a replacement Postie on!

I don't think they have any spare staff to cover walks where there is sickness or leave. They used to (or got staff to go out on a second walk as overtime). Some of these are now permanently covering otherwise uncovered walks. Operationally they are on a knife's edge with negative spare capacity. Technically they fail any fit-for-purpose test at the moment.

Another load of post today delivered in one go, to their credit, the tracked Covid testing kit I ordered on Thursday arrived at lunchtime.

However, Amazon who are usually great at delivering themselves to ED in their wise wisdom have decided to use Royal Mail tracked 48 for my Subscribe and Save orders which are due on Monday.

Son's family birthday cards arrived only 3 days late this year which is an improvement on 2018 when they were 9 days late. The service in SE22 has been abysmal since the closure of the sorting office, long before Covid. We've had long threads complaining about it on here for years. And yet RM crow about their massive profits (which, again, were decent before Covid). It makes me want to shake my fist at the sky it does.
I went today and they were very nice and had a look (they weren't busy which might have made a difference). They said a lot of stuff is already bundled up and will be delivered soon, but there was some other post waiting which they gave me. I showed my driving licence, probably worth taking ID.

    • No, signs of sense and scrutiny of "leaders" not knowing the impact of what they have done, so much so that every citizen in the UK will suffer financially as a result of an incompetent, incoherent, unhinged Govt that's impact is effecting every citizen in the UK. Where things were being turned around by the last lot, this lot has already compromised all that work in its first 120 days in power. You may not like it but that's the truth.  We are never going to agree and actually Reeves, Rayner and Starmer need to go, like yesterday.

    • I fully agree. I hope you had some khinkali (Georgian dumplings), they're fantastic! They used to have only meat ones but now they also have mushroom ones and they're great. I always try to fit in a honey cake at dessert. Overall I appreciate that their food and menu seems to only improve with time.
