This week we have two Southwark Healthy Rides with registration on Eventbrite as usual. When you register on Eventbrite, link details below, please give a phone number as it may be needed for Track and Trace. If you cannot make it, please cancel so that someone else can take the place.

Canada Water to Greenwich Park and Blackheath

Typical easy-paced (10 miles in 2 hours) Southwark Cyclists Healthy Ride. Start/finish point will be Deal Porter Square, opposite Canada Water Station, SE16 7AR. Start time 10am and finish 12 noon. Route is: Thames path to Greenwich, into Greenwich Park, up the hill to the Observatory, circuit of Blackheath, and return through the Park to CW. Lots of off-road path, no busy roads. Several stops at places of interest. Possibly see some of the preparations for the London Half Marathon on Sunday. A good ride for new-ish cyclists.

Canada Water to Battersea

16 mile ride on mostly quiet streets or cycle lanes. A few busy junctions. Typical easy-paced Southwark Cyclists Healthy Ride. Start/finish point will be Deal Porter Square, opposite Canada Water Station, SE16 7AR. Start time 10am and finish 1.30pm. Thames path route to Blackfriars bridge. Cross Thames here and continue on Cycleway 3 to Westminster. Continue on back streets to Chelsea Bridge.

Cross back and have a look at Battersea Park before stopping at the Black Sheep cafe by the Power Station (great bagels!). Use the new road through the impressive developments around the Power Station, then along to 9 Elms and a look at the American Embassy and the aerial swimming pool. Yes, there is a highly visible swimming pool 10 stories (50m) up between two apartment blocks! For more info go to https://www.embassygardens.com/sky-pool/. From Vauxhall follow Albert Embankment, then, if not too busy, Thames path past the Covid Memorial Wall. From Waterloo move inland and use mostly Cycleway 10 (ex Q1) back to Canada Water. Loads to see on this ride using a route devised by Philippa, who will be leading, Last ridden 5th June, see report and photos. Map of likely route:

These rides are arranged and led by Bruce Lynn and friends on behalf of Southwark Cyclists. We are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign. • The problem is Starmer can't shut up about his dad being a tool maker, they made Keir,  a right prize tool. Reeves continually blames the previous Govt, but correct me if I'm wrong but inflation was decreasing, unemployment was stagnant, with decreases and the occasional increase, things were beginning to stabalise overall.    Then we had the election 4 July when Starmer and co swept to power, three months on things are worse than they were before, yet Reeves continues to blame the former Govt. The national debt doubled overnight with public sectors all getting a wage increase and now the budget that penalises business with the increase in Employers national insurance. The result of which will be increased prices in the shops, increased inflation, increased numbers of redundancies, increased unemployment and increased pressures on the DWP to fund this    Future growth will go backwards and become negative, farmers will no longer farm in protest against the Govt, more people will become poorer and unable to pay their bills, things will spiral out of control and we'll have a repeat of the General Strike until this bunch of inept politicians resign and Kemi and co prevent the ship from hitting the iceberg and sinking.
    • Indeed so.  Just noting there are other options and many children and indeed young adults may well be perplexed and/or irritated by a cheque.
    • My experience of the CT is that when they screw up, their first instinct is to cover up. They are also shameless liars.
    • And that's your choice, but it's not everyone's choice.  Some people don't like or can't do what you do.
