Walked past with son. Stopped to look at the bit opposite Harris Boys where all that lovely long grass/ meadow and mowed path through it was as it was so beautiful and I wanted to show him. Sadly long grass gone and perimiter fence in - hoping one not because of the other😥.

Hay making generally runs sometime between July and September, depending on the wild flowers in the meadow. It is perhaps slightly early to cut now, but not overly so. It is better to cut the hay before it is trampled, as it would be by the event - so probably an acceptable call.

Gala have been pretty good at leaving the rye how they found it in the past, aside from the worn out areas from foot traffic, but it all grows back.

They are also very good at chauffeuring people out in the evening with minimal disturbance. This comes from the experience of being at the event and a neighbour.

Thanks Beansprout for mentioning this. I?ll time my visit on Friday to earlier to avoid crowds / loud music.

I think wait and see is the way to go as far as the meadow is concerned. Gala seem to have made good pledges and someone has experience of them being responsible.

The council have a commitment to biodiversity and have chosen not to mow in some areas so hopefully this is planned. See this page on the council website for more information https://www.southwark.gov.uk/parks-and-open-spaces/ecology.

I?d hoped to go once more to see the meadow but the weather has either been too hot or to wet for me lately.

In those areas where the council is in charge of the upkeep (including cemeteries) there has been a general policy of allowing 'meadow' grasses to grow in certain areas, whilst keeping other areas (e.g. around 'active' graves) properly mown. But all meadows do have to be mown in high or late summer - and then ideally grazed, although this is not Southwark policy, probably understandably. This is one area where the council do seem to be delivering what, I'm suspecting, a majority of their residents would want (I certainly do - and I feel more comfortable about painting others with my beliefs on this than I would over LTNs!)

I am surprised it takes a full week or more to get ready, ten days in which access to the park is restricted. I know it takes some time but this seems a bit excessive.

I would say that's normal where you have a small team and have agreed measures in place not to damage the site (normally a max number of vehicles, or max size of vehicles] - you can certainly do it more quickly with more people, bigger trucks, more activity, but it all causes more inconvenience to other users of the area and more damage to the site.

I've got no connection to Gala but some friends run a small festival of comparable size where they have the whole site (not a part of it, so no fencing required) and it takes them a week on site to set up.

In all fairness the rye was a mess when they the first time and took months for the grass to grow back. There were ruts and holes for ages. I?m not against the gala and hope everyone has fun but let?s not pretend it has no impact. I?m not sure how you repair that stuff quickly.

Yes - this! Was a bit of a mess the first time - report here:

As someone who loves the park, wildlife and festivals hope different this time.

Not really clear how preserving wildlife and a festival of this size go together?

On a completely different note, the entrance to PR has loads of broken glass stuck into soil. Rubbish also left strewn around in the Japanese summer house. What is it with people?

1. Agree reckon the wildlife would have something to say...

2. Sad...

Surprised that Southwark would let a festival/event go ahead on their green space anyway in the opening of Covid restrictions.

Just down the road in Rye Lane shoppers have been restricted by the closure of the lane to buses and traffic since Southwark closed it all down to environmental issues.

Seems like Southwark have seen the light and are now going to re-open the lane to buses and traffic.

    • The voters in these redwall seats all complain of a broken Britain etc etc - yet see no connection between the  country voting tory for 14 years and those towns voting for Brexit despite being warned it would lead to problems - they just moan about everything - often quite correctly (services are expensive or being cut, roads are a state, housing is expensive etc etc) but when you ask them when things were better.. well the answer is either    a) under a labour government when we part of the EU or b) some fictional Facebook sepia tinted picture of Britain "when you could leave your front door open, we didn't know how lucky we were" Voters say they want the truth but when someone sane (if dull and sometimes wrong) gets into power and says "lads, things are worse than we realised" they bleat about a lack of instant fixes and say it's wrong to keep blaming the last government (despite the lie about Labour crashing the economy in 2008 STILL being a stick labour get beaten with in 2025) as for rejoining the EU - the barriers are immense - you have a press and a large portion of teh population that will behave just abysmally. You have an electorate that recognises the mistake but is all very English and "made out beds, mustn't grumble" etc etc - no backbone. And you have an opposition party (or two) that is plain bonkers and when labour do lose power they would renege/reverse any progress made in matters EU in seconds Meanwhile EU countries can see all this clearly and have no incentive to engage until this country grows up and is able to demonstrate they won't act hysterically when reintegration starts
    • This is an extract from an edition with Dave Walker, mediator extraordinaire, born at the Elephant & Castle and still living in Southwark. One of his great achievements is training young people to be peer mediators ... who even step in to work with disputing adults! Just shows what can be achieved and who can achieve it. Pretty much anyone and everyone.  Next week we publish a special edition with Jo Berry who has very powerful story to tell. Further more, there was an invited audience of local people young and old, with whom she engaged in open discussion for an hour. Insights galore!
    • Yes, given the clear (and predictable) failure of Brexit, all the negative effects, and the overwhelming proportion of people agreeing that it has failed, I really can't understand why Labour have gone down the "making it work" road. But then I have no idea of what reversing some or all of it might involve. Also, Reform don't mention Brexit much, do they? If at all.  They push other aspects of what they say they stand for. So the people inclined to vote for them have probably completely forgotten they were ever associated with Brexit.
    • Latest news from the sunlit uplands, on the same day the UK economy 'unexpectedly' shrank 0.1%... As an aside, the cognitive dissonance shown by large parts of the UK electorate over Brexit is quite a thing to behold. I don't think it's controversial to say that Brexit is now considered by a large % of the population to have failed, with the % who see it as a success in single figures. Yet, initial polling for the upcoming Runcorn by-election shows Reform winning what is a relatively safe Labour seat. Now I get protest votes and all that, but Reform were literally the Brexit Party before the rebrand. If there's such a large consensus that Brexit failed, why would so many even consider voting for a party that actively helped deliver Brexit and all the known economic damage it would cause? And that's before you even get to the fantasy economics it presented at the last General Election. Labour haven't helped themselves either, by pursuing a nonsensical 'We can make Brexit work' approach, they have in effect made themselves impotent when it comes to attacking Reform and what they stand for...
