Just been reading a paper on this year?s council budget for the cultural celebrations fund.

https://moderngov.southwark.gov.uk/documents/s98599/Report-Cultural%20Celebrations%20Fund.pdf.

This year?s allocation is slightly lower than in past years: seems that in the past quite a fair chunk of it has been spent on fireworks events. Given fireworks are not exactly air-quality-friendly, do people think Southwark might well give fireworks night a miss? I speak as someone who has been keen on fireworks and bonfires in the past, but think they may have to go.

See eg https://www.londonair.org.uk/londonair/guide/Fireworks.aspx

I would like to see drones but I suspect they are monster expensive.

I love fireworks but I think the tide is turning. I think they should be kept back for N Y Eve and Diamond Jubilee, etc. with a small show for Bonfire Night. I also think they should not be allowed to be bought over the counter. They used to feel special but now they pop and glitter every other week - boring and wasteful.

Given the current economic climate, I?m sure most people would be understanding if there were no fireworks.

Not forever, but for the near and immediate future it?s fine.

The idea that each bang-whizz-fizz is burning up ?50?s by the second is quite a sobering thought.

I do like fireworks but think in this day and age, the only acceptable display is where the public are charged a notional sum to watch a public display. Remembering when the children were young we paid for tickets to see fireworks at Crystal Palace park - It was something like ?10 for a family group of 4.

Yes, if it is felt there has to be any sort of display it should be limited and properly controlled and low noise type only. This way those with vulnerable pets or other issues have time to plan and avoid.

    • as a retail worker I was once a member of USDAW I found they only have teeth when the majority of employees in a company are members. I remember in a former job I needed their help and found them somewhat flaky and therefore never re-enrolled in my next job. even if a union gets involved with something like working temparature it could take months to get a resolution..and then it'll be spring.
    • This afternoon our bike, a grey Condor, was stolen outside Dulwich library (the big one). If you come across it pls let me know.  There is no CCTV, as Historic England won’t allow them to put up Cameras onto the building and staff told us that it happens almost once a month! So beware of parking any bike there in Future!
