To be fair to Ireland, I'm pretty certain that after hosting it a few times as 'winners', they deliberately set out afterwards not to win it. It cost too bloody much to host!

Can't even blame it on pacts - there are still a few eg Cyprus/Greece, Russia/former Soviet republics, but I think a lot less of this, this year.

Due to the mild piss take by Terry Wogan, progressed by Graham Norton, it's seen as a bit of a joke/camp night out in the UK, potentially career ending. In other countries it is taken more seriously and the songs are better publicised, across Europe.

Most of the UK vote when we did middling came from EU countries with always a sympathy vote from Ireland.

UK isn't popular right now - although that started with the Gulf War 2.
