Well I have just been to Sainsbury on DKH and at the start of the bus lane there?s a camera warning sign. If there were more like this I would be less inclined to think it?s about revenue or even partly about revenue.

I think initially the cameras? in Dulwich village were sending out written warnings before they started to fine people so it?s possible

Lots of issues here, of which I think I have alluded to most of them.

The lack of discretion. On all camera operated controls none! I've learned from my mistakes, but was grumpy when I got a FPN for pulling in too early for a left turn on the South Circ (I appealed, but was just in the bus lane, it was a close decision on VAR), for forgetting that an empty Brixton Road at 7.10 on a Saturday morning the bus lane still applied, and that Xmas Eve is not a bank holiday (congestion charge).

So two out of three was me being forgetful, two out of three I was gaining no advantage over the traffic, but three out of three were correctly applied. But the system does not distinguish between a simple mistake as opposed to a serial offender.

Conversely I have been let off speeding three of four times in my life when stopped by the police for speeding, being totally contrite (difficult as this can be seen as sarcastic), and that has been a useful reminder.

A second point is driving standards as a whole. You pass your test as a teenager and can maybe drive for another 70 years without further training, apart from the possibility of a speed awareness course if you get caught. As someone with advanced cycle training, some further driver training and additional motorbike training, jeez there is some poor driving skills out there. And the lack of indicating.... In the 80s we got pulled up by the fuzz and my driver friend was questioned - I was trying to mouth 'mirror, signal, manoeuvre at him'. In deed, yes, we were pulled up for not indicating. Haven't the police got better things to do? In those days there were far more, and in many police authorities they would pull up the bad driver. Not necessarily a bad thing to do, but not part of modern policing.

Anyway take it on the chin. Revenues from traffic enforcement are tiny compared to the council budget as a whole. And slow down, read the road ahead, anticipate, and we will all get on a lot better on the roads.

They can make ANYTHING illegal and fine people..

Close roads .. Make them one way ... Prohibit Parking ... but only at certain times of the Day

.. but different times on different Days of the week so no one knows WTF is going on..

Lets say Alternate days cars of Different colours allowed / not allowed in certain areas..

Mon - Wed - Fri no RED Cars.. Tues - Thur no BLUE Cars..

Sounds Ridiculous ??? But no more so than some of the rules imposed on us (Mostly Drivers)

Now The ULEZ to be extended to North and South Circular Roads..

?15.00 or whatever to Drive to Sainsbury's if your vehicle does not comply.

It is out of Control..

I'm consistently amazed, in the land where the roundabout was invented, the sheer number of people that have no idea how to use them....

Totally agree!

Also, as we are months away from the extended Ulez zone there will need to be cameras on every corner.

Maybe these new cameras are part of that plan?

so Foxy, if I'm reading you correctly you are saying arbitrary nonsensical rules (such as colour of your car on alternate days) are equivalent to long-term plans to combat air pollution

What would be a better way to tackle air pollution re: older cars?

Drivers have more rules imposed because we cause more problems - wether it's congestion, air pollution, deaths, road rage etc -

They?d hang you for incontinence and fiddling your tax

Failure to hang yourself justified the axe

A deedely dee, a deedely dum

Looks like they brought back hangin? for everyone

(with thanks to John Cooper Clarke)

PS we already have a Low Emission Zone for buses, trucks, vans and the like within the M25, so plenty of cameras. It's been there for over ten years.

    • Money has to be raised in order to slow the almost terminal decline of public services bought on through years of neglect under the last government. There is no way to raise taxes that does not have some negative impacts / trade offs. But if we want public services and infrastructure that work then raise taxes we must.  Personally I'm glad that she is has gone some way to narrowing the inheritance loop hole which was being used by rich individuals (who are not farmers) to avoid tax. She's slightly rebalanced the burden away from the young, putting it more on wealthier pensioners (who let's face it, have been disproportionately protected for many, many years). And the NICs increase, whilst undoubtedly inflationary, won't be directly passed on (some will, some will likely be absorbed by companies); it's better than raising it on employees, which would have done more to depress growth. Overall, I think she's sailed a prudent course through very choppy waters. The electorate needs to get serious... you can't have European style services and US levels of tax. Borrowing for tax cuts, Truss style, it is is not. Of course the elephant in the room (growing ever larger now Trump is in office and threatening tariffs) is our relationship with the EU. If we want better growth, we need a closer relationship with our nearest and largest trading block. We will at some point have to review tax on transport more radically (as we see greater up take of electric vehicles). The most economically rational system would be one of dynamic road pricing. But politically, very difficult to do
    • Labour was right not to increase fuel duty - it's not just motorists it affects, but goods transport. Fuel goes up, inflation goes up. Inflation will go up now anyway, and growth will stagnate, because businesses will pass the employee NIC hikes onto customers.  I think farms should be exempt from the 20% IHT. I don't know any rich famers, only ones who work their fingers to the bone. But it's in their blood and taking that, often multi-generation, legacy out of the family is heart-breaking. Many work to such low yields, and yet they'll often still bring a lamb to the vet, even if the fees are more than the lamb's life (or death) is worth. Food security should be made a top priority in this country. And, even tho the tax is only for farms over £1m, that's probably not much when you add it all up. I think every incentive should be given to young people who want to take up the mantle.
