Letting Dog out/barking in garden - what?s reasonable/unreasonable?

Laws vary significantly from place to place but many consider barking excessive if/when: Your dog barks for 30 minutes straight. He barks more than a combined total of one hour in a 24-hour period. The barking occurs during ?quiet hours,? typically after 10 PM and before 7 AM.

You absolutely can train a dog not to bark at the wrong times, if you want to. It takes a bit of effort but not that much. You can train new dogs or old dogs. You can do it kindly and at no detriment to the dog. So anyone who hasn?t trained their dogs not to do this, in a built up area like we mostly live in, has simply decided to not focus on that training for whatever reason.

Unfortunately, amongst many things, the last year and a half has illustrated to me that consideration of others is far from the forefront of a lot of people?s priorities.

It?s going very loudly now at 11pm and the owners don?t seem to be bringing it in despite the constant howling and barking. Between the dog and the man who screams all nights at his cats Zippy and Angel, it?s a very noisy set of gardens!

Do these work? My neighbour's dog yaps early in the mornings and whenever it goes into the garden. I have mentioned it and they seemed surprised! I don't understand why they don't hear it but we only moved in recently and I don't want to cause any rift with them, so would rather just try and resolve it myself. I'm wondering if I could hang one of these from my tree and point it over the fence...

The problem is that the dog really needs this instruction not to bark from it's owner / leader. Anti-bark devices work but only when accompanied by an instruction that the dog can actually connect to its behaviour and it needs to be done immediately and consistently.

Of course they do but there's a difference between the occasional bark if a cat comes into the garden vs constant barking at all hours.

The rescue dog that we used to have barked if there was a knock at the door. Otherwise it was (mostly) quiet because it had been trained to know what was appropriate and when. It also wouldn't obey instructions from strangers. I'm not saying it was perfect by any means but it did not annoy the neighbours, nor was it just thrown into the garden to look after itself.

What time of the morning is the dog barking and for how long. If, for instance, a dog is let out at 7am and barks for 5-10 minutes the council would not view this as excessive.

Anti bark devices can be harmful, not only to the dog but to other animals.

I feel for you. Our downstairs neighbours? dog used to howl and throw himself against their front door non stop while they were at work? 8 hours a day or so? no solution for you, sorry.
