Imagine if the Lions did that in SA :)

It's back to the hotel room alone for them - and woe betide if Gatland catches them breaking a rule.

Strictness seems to be a rugby thing though - Once one of our wingers (for Wales) went home for the night and denied it and the then (extremely school master type) coach (Steve Hansen) went to feel the heat from his car engine - it was hot so he never played for Wales again.

To be fair...the rugby player 'rap sheet' is probably a bit longer than the track and field athlete (as collective sports). I think team environment plays into it as well....both negative (being egged on, confidence as part of a group) and positive (the strictness is about not letting your teammates down).

As an aside....first lions test kickoff in 75mins....as a neutral I'm really looking forward to it. Should be a cracker. Sorry...off topic!

Somebody explain Taekwondo ๐Ÿฅ‹ please

This is a weird ?sport? if ever I?ve seen one. Obviously no more weird than sliding a polished granite stone with a handle on down an icy path swept by two people on it?s way, but still bloody strange.

Of course, this is some of what the Olympics are about, things we know absolutely nothing about, yet find very compelling ultimately.

Sport taekwondo from what I know cannot allow the full contact effects of the blows, there would be injuries and fatalities.

So what we see is a bastardised version of the martial art with heavy body padding and certain blows not allowed, so it can be allowed as a sport. I think the '99% kicks' style of competition taekwondo is not representative of the portfolio of attacks a practitioner has at his/her disposal, but eye gouges and breaking opponents' collar bones probably wouldn't go down too well. I think also, because of the need to keep distance (when in competition, just making a contact can score a point) that's why kicks are the primary strike.

Same as with karate, I believe.

I know - I met the whole Aussie team once in Mumbles after their * Defeat * to Llanelli - they were crazy but they brought the whole pub a round.

Go the Lions - 1-0

Really enjoying this, despite trying to fast forward through much of the early hours events on I-player. Highlights include the Indonesian lady running off court to get a replacement badminton racket, the Italians' celebration yesterday as well as sharing the high jump gold, our freestyle BMXers and of course footage of family and friends celebrations in Blighty. And of course some of the emotions on winning.

Seems to manage OK without the crowds, those teams in the venues make a lot of noise including clapping for other athletes in their run up to the jumps. I think we also see how close competitors are to each other, some regularly competing around the world.

Point has also been made that it seems to be better now that GB have backed off their ruthless pursuit of medals, now punching only slightly over our weight.

There's a fascinating series on BBC iplayer about the work and money that goes into producing athletes that win Olympic medals. And also some surprising behind the scenes stories of personal challenges overcome. Well worth a look.

    • I was talking to my brother in the law last weekend who works for a different water company. He said he and his colleagues watch TWโ€™s woes with a mixed of horror, disbelief and then relief that they work for a different water company. Worth a watch. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m00284vt
    • But Thatcher is dead. Nobody since has brought the utilities back under public ownership (if that's the right term). So there are many people who could be blamed. Meanwhile the shareholders get richer and everyone else gets increasing bills and a poorer service. Plus as said above, a massive waste of a limited resource like water. Not to mention the polluted rivers and seas. At least the privatisation of the railways is being reversed. Hopefully water may be on the list somewhere.
    • That's really helpful. Do the Community Councils still exist? It sounds to me that whoever the contact is on the council who has sorted out the North Cross Road notice board and put the new list of councillors in it must at least have access to the key for that one? Unless it was one of the unlocked ones. And of course if somebody knows where the keys are, they may have no idea that people are looking for them or that this forum thread exists. Which are the notice boards which are not locked?  The very helpful locksmith near the station (?Callows?)  might be able to provide keys for them, or if not, new locks, in return for some local publicity? In fact, they may be able to advise in general, rather than keep trying unresponsive people at the council. But then of course there is still the question of who is going to take responsibility for putting appropriate East Dulwich community information into them and updating it as necessary.
    • Our residents' association used to have keys many moons ago, but when locks were changed, we tried everyone (including ward councillors) to get keys to no avail. A couple of boards are not locked. The Community Councils originally paid for all the notice boards in Dulwich. May have come under the Cleaner Greener budget.
