Keef
Oh come on, taking short cuts is all part of the learning experience, and sets kids up nicely for their futures in the work place... Especially if they're going public sector! Jennys
does it have to be strictly East Dulwich - if not how about Phyllis Pearsall, who lived in Court Lane Gardens and who started the A to Z. Didn't William Blake have his vision of angels at Peckham Rye, and there is a blue plaque to the actor Boris Karloff at 36 Forest hill road. jim_the_chin
why do people think that 'interesting' facts means 'celebrity' facts. i would think census info would provide more interesting stuff about the demographic of the area. ED has changed immensely over the past 10 years, is any of that reflected in the census data? Smiler
There is a blue plaque for the lady who invented the A to Z - she seems to have lived there all her life. And Enid Blyton lived up near the library. fish
In 1909, a member of the Women's Freedom League (Mrs Moore of East Dulwich) warned the Metropolitan Police that some women had been polishing up their pistol skills and intended to take a shot at Prime Minister Herbert Asquith, a firm opponent of female suffrage. ????
There are no very interesting facts about East Dulwich it was largely farmland until the late 19th century, has had a couple of famous authors and a horror film star born/live locally and now has a smaterring of tv actors and a few comics...it has very little of architechtural merit and is mentioned in a jeeves novel (the mention hinting at the awful drab surburban nature of it). Doesn't mean I don't like it but it's hardly Greenwich...or even Deptford....or even Camberwell for historical/literary merit is it? Brendan
East Dulwich locals seem to have a certain unkempt, scruffiness to their appearance, which distinguishes them from the folk of the surrounding suburbs.
