HelBel65
Hi all. I'm on Overhill - first winter here, so just wondering how well our street is gritted for the snow? The idea of losing control of the car and sliding into Underhill is in danger of keeping me awake tonight...thanks for any experience! Horsebox
Not sure about Overhill but for comparison, Crystal Palace Road is not usually gritted and when there's more than an inch or 2 of snow, the junction with Goodrich becomes a clusterfuck of incompetent motorists who obviously just *had* to make their journey, sliding all over the road.If you're that worried about it then perhaps best not to drive in the snow unless you absolutely have to. tallulah71
no gritting....kids play out on their sleds! Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/28141-snow-overhill-road/#findComment-608430 Share on other sites
mollydoodle
They tend not to grit underhill road and makes for interesting driving at the steep bit especially when the p13 is going down the hill as well! We live at the top of underhill road and don't drive down it in the snow just use the main road Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/28141-snow-overhill-road/#findComment-608431 Share on other sites
tallulah71
Underhill usually not bad due to traffic. If you absolutely have to use the car, park it further away (eg on Underhill) and walk...I mean, slide to it. Jeremy
They only tend to grit the bus routes. My advice would be to park your car in relatively safe place (away from corners/bends/hills) and leave it alone until the snow's gone. Darren Gray
I'm 137 Overhill Road and have had to close my personal training studio because last year I lost control in the car at the same point you mention. Didn't cause or have an accident thank goodness but this year I'm not taking the chance. BeccaL
As said, Overhill doesn't tend to be gritted because not a bus route - would suggest not driving if poss. *waves at other Overhill residents* Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/28141-snow-overhill-road/#findComment-608460 Share on other sites
HelBel65
Thanks for the replies. Is as I feared then! I'm right at the brow of the hill and really don't fancy attempting it now I've looked out of the window! Waving back to fellow Overhillers - stay safe! Ps any hot tips on getting to the South Bank without a car? Jeremy
South Bank is quite walkable - unless you've got a lot of stuff to carry, or are physically impaired. I walked to work in Moorgate during the last heavy snowfall, it was almost enjoyable.Alternatively, buses often keep running. Even if they're not making it over DKH, you could walk over to Camberwell or Peckham and try picking one up from there. StraferJack
yeah I tend to walk it as well - as Jeremy says it's almost enjoyable (providing you don't seriously hurt yourself with a head-over-heels incident)But if the buses are running then 176 is best. A train to LB and walk along the South Bank isn't so bad either (maybe a train from Denmark Hill/Herne Hill to Blackfriars would suit as well) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/28141-snow-overhill-road/#findComment-608480 Share on other sites
Jeremy
Oh yeah, Blackfriars is great for the south bank now they've opened the southern entrance! Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/28141-snow-overhill-road/#findComment-608491 Share on other sites
Help-Ma-Boab
If it gets so bad transport if up the creek and you are able/its not too far defo do the walk as SJ/ Jeremy say. Did it a couple years ago into Bermondsey Street. Wellies, thick socks and it was brilliant. Peaceful and nothing (apart from a deep fried pizza amongst other things) beats the crunch of fresh snow under your feet. AD
Underhill Road was gritted last week, not sure why it hasn't been sine then as half of it blows away.A serious lack of gritting going on at the moment which is concerning ! HelBel65
I just moved the car down to Underhill to give myself some choices later - roads are clear, and the pavements in Underhill and Overhill (beginning to sound like the Wombles) have been gritted - they're fine....for now anyway. INMCD
We've recently moved from Overhill Road and it was never gritted - 2 years ago I tried to get my car up the hill and into the drive but it spun around and crashed into the wall. Had to get the RAC out and about 5 builders came and helped push it back down - I was very embarrassed and my husband was furious! I hope they do grit it for you - they definitely should. Good luck and be careful xxxx Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/28141-snow-overhill-road/#findComment-608536 Share on other sites
ludoscotts
Snow is settling on overhill so please be carefull as you come up from lordship lane. Saw lots of cars sliding back down to lordship lane last time it snowed. BeccaL
Road along by Ladlands was ok in the middle for cars about 30 mins ago, as long as you're careful. Not sure how the turn on from L lane is though. Take care all Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/28141-snow-overhill-road/#findComment-608737 Share on other sites
