huncamunca
I saw a newspaper picture from the political campaignA woman was kissing a child, who was obviously in painShe spills with compassion, as that young child'sFace in her hands she gripsCan you imagine all that greed and avariceComing down on that child's lipsWell I hope I don't die too soonI pray the lord my soul to saveOh Ill be a good boy, I'm trying so hard to behaveBecause there's one thing I know, Id like to liveLong enough to savourThat's when they finally put you in the groundIll stand on your grave and tramp the dirt downWhen England was the whore of the worldMargeret was her madamAnd the future looked as bright and as clear asThe black tarmacadamWell I hope that she sleeps well at night, isn'tHaunted by every tiny detailcos when she held that lovely face in her handsAll she thought of was betrayalAnd now the cynical ones say that it all ends the same in the long runTry telling that to the desperate father who just squeezed the life from his only sonAnd how its only voices in your head and dreams you never dreamtTry telling him the subtle difference between justice and contemptTry telling me she isnt angry with this pitiful discontentWhen they flaunt it in your face as you line up for punishmentAnd then expect you to say thank you straighten up, look proud and pleasedBecause youve only got the symptoms, you haven't got the whole diseaseJust like a schoolboy, whose heads like a tin-canFilled up with dreams then poured down the drainTry telling that to the boys on both sides, being blown to bits or beaten and maimedWho takes all the glory and none of the shameWell I hope you live long now, I pray the lord your soul to keepI think Ill be going before we fold our arms and start to weepI never thought for a moment that human life could be so cheapcos when they finally put you in the groundTheyll stand there laughing and tramp the dirt down Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/2793-thatcher-in-hospital-doesnt-look-good/#findComment-85722 Share on other sites
ratty
I know what you mean Sean. Just had the same conversation with my missus who said - "do you think there will be a street party?" pablogrande
We could organise the worlds biggest conga, I'm sure Ken wouldn't object to closing down central London for the day Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/2793-thatcher-in-hospital-doesnt-look-good/#findComment-85730 Share on other sites
citizenED
Alas, when she passes, there will be as many who'll want to heap big praises on her - I would kinda opt for a truce, we'll have no street party if you don't go on and on and on about her legacy. A three line obit. in the Telegraph would do and we'll say no more. *Bob*
Well comrades, ding-dong, the witch is.. unwell. But whether you like it or not (and millions didn't) she grabbed good old blighty by the balls and dragged it kicking and screaming out of a huge sack of shit, at a time when no-one else had the bottle to say boo to a union. Marmora Man
I'm with Bob on this - the balance of any objective legacy tribute will be that she did more good for Britain, the political landscape and Britain's standing in the world than otherwise. You have to have been there in the 60's and 70's to truly understand the change she wrought in the 80's - changes needed badly. I'd accept that in her latter days as PM she was too narrow minded and out of touch, but that is something that all long serving PMs experience - cf: Tony Blair. PS: Just heard the news - Mrs Thatcher is leaving hospital later today. Asset
I didn't live here in the height of the Thatcher years *Bob*. I lived in a squat in SE1, quite different. Not that it makes much difference to be honest. What did she say? "There is nos such thing as community", she made damn sure that was the case.I agree changes were badly needed after the '70's I'm just not sure there couldn't have been better methods. ????
Yup -predictable "thatch" comments, from well heeled SE22...can anyone imagine wot a toilet this place would ave been like if Labour had won in say 1983...go and look at their manifesto...... TillieTrotter
Went to see "The Death of Margaret Thatcher" at a fringe theatre in Hoxton last week. Twas interesting and at one stage when a Northerner decides he will walk from Newcastle(methinks) down to London to spit on Maggie's grave and collects thousands of supporters on his way upset me a little. I am an admirer of Mrs T, and I dont really want to get into the Pro/cons of her but I would hate to think that that scene would be a reality. Asset
Quids, don't be so judgemental, You know nothing about me, where I grew up, how I grew up etc etc so unless you've got a constructive comment to make zip it. *Bob*
At the height of the Thatcher years I was marching with the best of 'em, shouting slogans - yet knowing nothing. These days I feel I've gained a little more perspective (much of it from the Marmora Mans of this world) - and no longer feel the need to define The Thatcher Years as I once did: entirely by way of an episode of 'The Young Ones' circa 1982. ????
I was talking in general Asset - you paranoia?....but as it happens I'll do what I like not what someone on an internet forum tells me, why don't you zip it......so many little Hitlers on here who keep telling me to shut up because I don't seem to keep to some kind of liberal consensus...all a bit ironic reallyI actually voted labour in 1983 as i was a naive, student idiot, some of us grow up enough to see a bigger picture than, as Bob put it, spend our lives in The Young Ones. Celebrating someone's potential death...yup sounds great and liberal to me... citizenED
Here is a carrot, here is a stick. Guess which one Thatcher chose? How about, "Look people, the world is changing, we need to consider other ways of structuring society and the workplace so that we can cope". No. "I know let's pull the rug from under everyone, then watch them wallow in the mire until they can sort it out for themselves".
