I live on the Nunhead side of Peckham Rye and love it. I live in a modern block of flats on the third floor and look out over the common. Lordship Lane, Nunhead and Rye Lane are all minutes away and I love them all for different reasons. It'sa a great area to be i because so many different kinds of shops and restaurants are within reach.

Exactly. This whole area is much more suburban and family oriented than Brixton which is still cooler / edgier with better ammenities (art-house cinema / tube / clubs etc). Its all about your stage of life. If you are still partying every weekend with your single mates, you might find the area a bit too quiet. With that said, there are lots of good restaurants / cafes / green open spaces etc and Peckham, more so that Dulwich, is has an increasing amount of interesting things going on (from what I've been told)

Ah ok, sounds interesting. I'm on the cusp really, still enjoying some lively nights (and Brixton would still be on the door step for that!) but wanting some nice green space and somewhere that's nice and chilled and that feels safe

:-)

Peckham Rye feels a lot safer to me than Brixton. And you have the choice of East Dulwich on one side (designer baby buggy land), Rye Lane on the other (big high-street basics & ethnic foods) and Bellenden on your doorstep (cool little independent shops). Transport links are great.

But as people have said, Peckham Rye is going to feel a bit sleepy for anyone coming from Brixton.

Eh? The lovely Brockwell Park is just up the road, as is the park with the windmill in (Blenheim Gardens I think)!

I moved to Nunhead/Peckham Rye about 6 years ago after 14 years living in Brixton central. Things I miss are my old neighbours, and proximity to the Lido, the Ritzy, the Rec, and the Tube for getting into town but Brixton is just a short hop away on the 37. Things I love about here are how much more open, green and relaxed it is, the views and the sense of cleaner air. Can't really comment on the night action because nightlife is no longer on my agenda but the Bussey Building activities look promising.

We moved from brixton (ferndale road) to east dulwich 3 years ago; we moved because we felt it was time to wind down from going out every night, which brixton and clapham offer up easily, and plant some roots and (dare I say it), settle down.

Which of course is a nonsense and what Peckham (and by that what I really mean is lordship lane east dulwich) offers is a lively nightlife should we want it but also decent shops and vast open green spaces (we have a dog). We started in east dulwich but bought recently in Peckham- cross the invisible line and you get more bricks and mortar for your pound

Welcome!

I used to live in Brixton which I loved however, much prefer East Dulwich / Peckham Rye. It feels like a community plus a bit greener! Also I have had some great nights out here, it doesn't have to be sleepy. The 37 bus will get you to Brixton and like others have menrioned, the overground opens East London up. You wouldn't regret a move to SE London!

Likewise, I'm a refugee from Brixton area. Lived in Peckham - near Bellenden Road - for last three years or so. Wouldn't go back. Greener, nicer range of smaller shops. Brixton definitely has its attractions - but it's not far and still available if you want it.

shhh... don't tell as soul, hipper than hip for those in the know... Franks, Bussey, Hannah Barry, Royal Court, CLF Arts Cafe, arthouse and indie films at PeckhamPlex, Bar Story, Montpelier's Back Room Cinema, Begging Bowl, Bold Tendencies, Sunday Painter, The Old Waiting Room and that's about 5% of it... AND then you have all the amazing multi-cultural influences, best African Fabrics, Chinese Supermarket, Khan's where you can everything from DIY tools to Baklava, the persian shop Persepolis, the list goes on and on... only worry is, now we have the Ginger line, that it will get over hyped and the whole well-kept wonderful secret will be spoilt as 'fools rush in'!!!

Wow i'm sold!!!! Thanks everyone for your responses, it sounds like a great place to live. I love Brixton but even over the last year I have noticed that its started to get more and more trendy-Brixton village used to be a well kept secret but sadly that is no longer the case! Peckham Rye sounds like it still has that vibe to it...exciting!

    • https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/libraries-0/carnegie-library It's a nice little library and meeting place.  One of the Carnegie ones of course. Actually not so little, the actual building: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Carnegie_libraries_in_Europe#/media/File:Carnegie_Library_Herne_Hill.JPG I get books from there sometimes, and have been to an occasional talk.  Last week there was a foursome quietly playing ?bridge/whist there mid-morning. I'm afraid I don't know anything about the Hub project itself.
    • Hi,  I’m wondering if anyone needs help with their dog during weekdays? I work part time as a nurse and so I’m free Mon, Wed, Thurs and Fri each week.  I have young children and we usually go for a walk in the afternoons, around 1pm. I’d be happy for a child friendly dog to tag along with our stroll if they’re home alone during the day. The kids would love it and it’ll break up the day for your pooch. I’d charge £12. I live opposite Goodrich Road Primary school, so if anyone is close by and would like some help, let me know.    My contact number is 07599352340. Hayley
    • I bloody hate "grab". It used to mean "snatch" (not in its ruder sense) as in snatch and grab, and now it's just used all the time instead of "get" or "collect". eg "I'll come and grab them later" or "can I grab a cup of tea?" Also "Up for grabs" GRRRR
