The Tory press might have not have reported on this yet, another clear Brexit dividend. Note that this analysis is for the period before the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine so that caveat does not apply here.

'Considerable'?

Probably worth making a couple of points:

- definitely a negative. No debate on that.

However...

- unlikely to be a huge to surprise to most 'sensible' (make of that what you will) brexit supporters. Early 'trade friction' was always a reasonable expectation. (Please don't come at me with the 'there are no downsides' quote, I previously agreed that was an absolute load of cr@p)

- so its less than 3 percent per annum food inflation, with an impact on the cost of living for low earners of ~1% over 2 years....so less than 0.5%pa....

In the context of overall inflation rates....not really moving the needle much it would seem.....

Sorry Cat, but you dismissing ''there will be no downside'' doesn't magically make it go away. As stupid as you think it was to say that, it was oft repeated and millions believed it.

Such quotes were said by the people running the Leave campaign, not some random bloke off the EDF and his so-called ''sensible'' Brexit. No one else was listening to you.

Rees-Mogg came up with another gem, that food prices would fall 20% after leaving the EU.

I could quote something similar that was promised for the fishing and farming communities but hasn't been delivered. The NHS, and so on.

Again, millions of people believed all this.

All these promises haven't been delivered and plenty of Leave voters are now recognising that.

The Brexit that was promised has failed and there won't be a second chance.

It's now just a question of how long it will take before the UK forms closer economic ties with the EU again...

Fair enough...as I've always said...my opinions are my own....why other people voted how they did and who they listened to to reach their decision is their business.

If you've an issue with people voting leave because they thought there would be no downsides. Then please take it up with those people.

But you are probably right that many were taken in by exaggerated and misleading headlines, and those same people are now probably being taken in once again by the exaggerated and misleading headlines blaming the dire state of the UK economy of brexit. Where really brexit has been largely an economic irrelevance relative to the major economic shocks the country has suffered in recent years.

Tbf you can hardly blame them for something they didn't say and don't believe.

Nice swerve on this though DR...:)

I know online forums are “over it”/bored by it but the damage mounts and pretending things will be better in 20/50 years as this stuff mounts is just for the birds

I get why people stuck their fingers in their ears over stuff they can’t do much about

but this is self-Inflicted and won’t ever ever get better until the country that “broke it pays for it “

right now I would settle for the country acknowledging the problem instead of pretending it didn’t exist

This sounds like one of those business meets Brexit 'sob stories' that Cat would happily swat away as acceptable collateral damage in the great Brexit masterplan. Or, 'his' great Brexit masterplan to be exact.

You know, the one where a business goes under thus affecting numerous livelihoods...

This will upset a few people I’m sure

(they had better get used to it   Will be a LOT more of this in coming years as uk tries to mitigate the damage whisky pretending all is well)

Greetings from afar. I'm touched to see that you're still thinking about me DR.

Reason for the touching base is to flag that I think we should all be proud that they have finally made a film out of the dramatic screenplay that is this thread.

I never thought JRM would be the right fit to play me, but I think he did a reasonable job, although he didn't even attempt my accent. While Marina absolutely nails the spiralling anger and futility of an amalgam of the various EDF anti-brexit posters over the years.

I think we're in with a good shot come red carpet awards season with this one.

Your occasional reminder that the famously ‘oven-ready’ Brexit deal has been unravelling spectacularly fast. Although no one is talking seriously about ‘re-joining’ or anything like that yet - the trauma is still too fresh for most - I wouldn’t be surprised if the argument reopens in a few years’ time.

Bregret reaches new highs! “Brexit has failed… we’ve not delivered on Brexit and the Tories have let us down very, very badly.”.....guess who said that! :classic_biggrin:

Very good article from Behr this morning - has a go at explaining why Brits just can't even face talking about it (not that they weren't warned and they still have to deal with the mess - but still...)

Benefits of deregulation being felt in neighbouring country?

"The reason for the notices are inadequate evidence of food traceability and alleged non-compliance with import legislation from non-EU countries."

Funnily enough I was thinking of posting after watching Question Time.  Cat, not recommending it as it was awful.  The idea was good but the anecdotal stuff was not challenged by the Beeb, pretty much reflecting the BBC at the time, which probably had enough of an impact to swing the referendum vote.  Two examples last night, "immigrants immediately sign on for benefit" and roofers in the UK follow safety rules, but French and German builders don't.  Clearly unaware of the heavy regulation in both continental countries.  I expect most dodgy builders are the poor quality Brits who do cash in hand for the ex pats, certainly reasonably common in Brittany.  We got fed up eg Labour electioneering so switched off.

Shame that Victoria Derbyshire isn't doing QT rather than Fifi Bruce.  She takes no prisoners.

Snipes at Clacton doesn't help your cause Steppenwolf.  Come on Cat, let's have a good debate.

A small article, in the scheme of things but so telling

years of posturing, declarations, bans

but English towns and businesses suffer.  So of course it gets reversed

just like everything about Brexit will be

    • Used Mason & Green for airport transfers etc thanks to recommendations on here. Never been disappointed, always reliable. https://www.masonandgreen.co.uk/
    • I find the self diagnosis thing  a bit worrying. I once nearly died because a hospital  doctor misdiagnosed a ruptured ovarian cyst and peritonitis as food poisoning. It was lucky I hadn't initially diagnosed it as food poisoning myself and assumed  the sickness and pain would go away. I called my GP, who called an ambulance. I ended up having an emergency operation in a different hospital, the first hospital not having scanning facilities (this was in the olden days) 🙄
    • but GPs have your medical records. Perhaps  by "self diagnosis" you meant that you recognised the pain.
    • Some employers prefer older people as they are deemed to be more reliable, B and Q at one time had lots of 'older people'. I retired at 66  but on a casual visit to my old department, my former boss offered me a job saying I could name my hours. Would have loved to taken him up on it but the reason I took 'early retirement' was that my arthritis restricted my mobility re walking and standing for periods of time.  I would say it may not be ageism but not being deemed suitable for the position.  Someone I know was always looking for part time work but having spoken to her over a period of years, although she may have had the qualifications  needed for the work, her general attitude towards others and her very set views, I could understand why she found paid employment difficult to achieve. Can you do voluntary work? This may give you additional transferable skills.
