Hi Jules-and-Boo

Hello there.

I have made my first Sourdough loaf with some success but Not perfect.

I was feeding my Starter and it was Active and Rising and Falling (Bubbles)

so I was feeding it and ended up with a huge jar full.

Then It then stopped Bubbling and become less active.

Did a lot of research and found this Video on Youtube.

The guy Jack is very helpful and has many Vids..

It would seem I might just have Too Much Starter

Have you made any bread with your starter

Farmers was my first Port of Call but they don't sell them.

But they have had a few inquiries from other people.

Looks like more people are baking during these difficult times..

I have several loaf tins but the Proving Baskets are for shaping

Foxy.

Had a major disaster this lunch time..

Discarded a lot of my starter and fed the remaining starter with 50g Flour 50g Water

Went shopping and on return my stater was very active and ready to use.

Filled my bowl with water salt and small amount of sugar 5grms

as I was adding my starter the whole lot tipped over and I lost the lot.

Lucky I had not put the flour in.

Fortunately I had kept the discarded starter to one side so I have fed it and we are off again.

I wonder if all this is worth it ??

Such Fun

Ah I feel for you Foxy!

I do enjoy it, though sometimes my bread is a failure and I don't understand why. I only started during lockdown so apparently still have years to go before I am an expert.

I know you prefer in person shopping, but I asked for a banneton for Christmas (didn't get one), and pointed my family to these 2 sites that are selling them (and aren't Amazon), both have oval and round baskets of various sizes:

Shipton Mill: https://www.shipton-mill.com/flour-direct-shop/books-etc/baking-equipment

Nisbets: https://www.nisbets.co.uk/kitchenware-and-knives/pastry-and-baking-supplies/bread-proving-baskets/_/a33-3

I've just been using a bowl with a clean tea towel thus far, but would like a basket. Guess I'll have to buy my own...

Oh no!

Well, if you decide it isn't worth it, I get my sourdough delivered from Tesco with my groceries. I then slice it up and freeze it, and toast it from frozen.

Not as nice as other sources, but comes to my door :))

But if you're going out to shop, M&S San Francisco sourdough isn't bad, and not a vastly inflated price, though the vastly inflated price places probably sell much nicer bread :)

ETA: But unless they've changed since lockdown, M&S don't have the same sourdough every day, and I only like the San Francisco one. Also they run out quite quickly (though maybe not at the moment with fewer people shopping).
