If a bird or a squirrel has fallen down the chimney, it will be impossible for it to climb back up, so, lighting a fire is NOT going to help - birds are very sensitive to smoke and quickly killed by it. If it's a victorian-style fireplace, they fall down to a ledge just above the fireplace. If you can open the cover into the flue (within the fireplace, above the fire) the trapped bird can fly out into the room. (you'll probably get brick dust falling down as well, which will need to be swept up) Then you'll need to open a window to let it fly out. It will be very scared.

And if it was me in the room with it - I'd be scared too.
