edcam
It started today. We went to Bond Street for a bit of Chrimbo shopping via Canada Water from Denmark Hill. Loved it! Very quick, very easy and very comfortable. The chaos of pre-Christmas West End was much soothed by such an uncomplicated journey. I expect it will be a little more hectic at peak hours but overall I think it will be a big bonus for the area. benmorg
Bond St (south end) was a 15-20 minute journey from DH with the Victoria service & tube. Dare I ask how long it took via Canada Water? edcam
I've done the journey via Victoria countless times and have never, ever made it in 15-20 mins! I'm not sure that was possible. It was 26 mins via CW. I'd have called that a good journey time via Victoria (and without the tube interchange misery.) Huggers
today went from Peckham Rye to Shoreditch high street for bethnal green where I was doing a weekend workshop.Yesterday I did it by driving to Brockley. wonderful! DH to Victoria is 9 mins and Green Park is only one stop away on the Victoria Line. I can understand it taking longer to get to Bond Street Station, but Bond St itself was a quick hop via the train. womanofdulwich
If you have ever got to Victoria mainline station at 8.20 am and thought you could just get on the victoria line- believe me its not that easy- queues/ platforms closed until queues clear. It can take at least 10 mins from getting off the train to getting on to the victoria line train north bound.:( Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/27237-east-london-line/#findComment-599010 Share on other sites
LondonMix
Agree, in the rush hour 15-20 min is totally impossiblewomanofdulwich Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> If you have ever got to Victoria mainline station> at 8.20 am and thought you could just get on the> victoria line- believe me its not that easy-> queues/ platforms closed until queues clear. benmorg
I've always found connecting to the District Line a pain, but Victoria Line quicker.Still an option in rush hour, but no longer at weekends. I've been shopping in town at Christmas since about 1995 and I've never had such an unhassled journey (especially coming home.) edcam
You'd have to have extremely long legs to get to Oxford St in 5 mins! Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/27237-east-london-line/#findComment-599071 Share on other sites
StraferJack
more like 10-12 minutes but is that so bad? And you're basically walking up Bond St so yeah I'd say you were "central" Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/27237-east-london-line/#findComment-599072 Share on other sites
Southeast Twenty Stu
Surely the best route to bond street would previously have been via London bridge? Can't see how going out to Canada Water to get on further down the jubilee line can be quicker / easier. StraferJack
your point was " Green Park station isn't really that central (I.e. not close to anywhere you'd want to go except the parks.) Miss P
Please excuse my silly question - I avoid the tube due to dreadful claustrophobia & I would like to use the ELL but am concerned about the bit where it must go under the Thames. Can anyone tell me if it's remotely like being on the tube?I would like to try it out tomorrow as an alternative route to work, but it's not a good look to turn up pale and shaking..... Michael Palaeologus
Miss P, its like going through a shortish tunnel on a normal train. The Overground trains are proper train sized AND there are no walls between the carriages, which makes looking down the length of the train as it goes rounds bends quite groovy. On the whole, a positive addition to the transport system. JohnL
Changing at Canada Water between 8 and 9 is a nightmare - there's a bottleneck at the escalator.I'll use Peckham Rye to Clapham/Chelsea and Shep Bush though. Peckhamrye
I work in Rotherhithe so this morning got the train at Peckham Rye to Rotherhithe - took me just under 15 minutes compared to 35 minutes on a rickety, noisy, unreliable P12. I'm a convert. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/27237-east-london-line/#findComment-599141 Share on other sites
Miss P
Marvellous, thank you Michael, will be brave! Plan to change onto DLR at Shadwell. Can't bare the P12 or 381 any longer with their crazy twisty routes! Will miss the Hilton Ferry over the river though. greenwater
I was worried about the change at Canada water. Not as great as we might have hoped then for those of us hoping for a much quicker commute to Canary Wharf?
