astrid83
Hi,I'm in early pregnancy, only 11 weeks so far but am already suffering with PGP. My physiotherapist has given me loads of exercises to do but also suggested pregnancy Pilates. They do it at the physio but it's so expensive (?30/session) so I am looking in to finding something a bit more affordable and local.Any suggestions? Jo'sEnglish
I did pregnancy pilates at Dulwich therapy rooms, with a lady called Luisa who was very good. I think they have a few classes there? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/27011-pregnancy-pilates-for-pgpspd/#findComment-596011 Share on other sites
andyjake
I did prenatal Pilates and Yoga at esph on Lordship Lane. Really good classes and the yoga lessons gave me lots of exercises which I could use outside of the lessons to help with back pain and other pregnancy aches. Good luck! astrid83
Thank you for your suggesions! I've been told that Pilates is brilliant for building up pelvic and core muscles to prevent further pelvic problems. My physio said that Yoga can make pregnant women too flexible which is not good either? Countjc
Hi Astridso sorry to hear you are suffering. I had it pretty severely in both pregnancies.in terms of pilates, you do need to be careful as some exercises can seriously aggravate things and make it worse so I would suggest you only do exercises recommended by a physio. The physio loads of us locally have used is Russell at Dulwich Physio. He saved me this time as first time around I was wheelchair bound whereas he kept me mobile, using crutches to the end. his no is 020 8693 9930a good pilates dvd is the APPI pregnancy pilates video as it has specific SPD things in it.http://www.serola.net/ are definately the best belts around if a bit expensive. way more supportive than the hospital ones. i think physios can get them at a discounted rate so do ask.http://www.pelvicpartnership.org.uk/ has loads of tips and advice and can provide counselling. Its important you see your obstratrician as well as they can advise on pain management which is pretty key to staying mobile.http://www.suelewisantenatal.co.uk/ this lady is the guru of pelvic pain. i went and saw her for one appointment and she gave me loads of tips and exercises.hope some of these things help you out.just so you know, you will bounce back. I did straight away after baby no. 1. Its been a bit slower this time around but I think thats from c section problems and a toddler to look after.all the best Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/27011-pregnancy-pilates-for-pgpspd/#findComment-598167 Share on other sites

simonethebeaver
I'd also like to publicise the fact that St Thomas' has a women's health physio department, unlike Kings, which is only general. Your GP can refer you. Having suffered badly in pregnancy one, I asked to be referred immediately this time round. The assessment is totally different to the generalists at Kings (who are lovely, I should add) and they are happy to do manipulation and specialist work. Obviously they are NHS with the constraints that brings, but having spent a fortune on a chiropractor last time because the physios couldn't help, at least it helps keeps the costs down. CJ_Scott
I had PGP during my second pregnancy. It was extremely painful. Daily tasks were very difficult as was sleeping and walking. I was terrified I'd have to leave work early, not be able to care for my first born or have a natural labour. I had treatment at the British School of Osteopathy in SE1 where they have a specialist pregnancy clinic. I went from not being able walk properly to feeling pretty normal. Had to strip down to underwear infront of students but treatment and tutor (helen) were great. The fist session took about 1.5 hours and following sessions 40 mins. Each session was 22 quid and I think cheaper if you receive benefits. I remember being told that 80% of cases in pregnancy clinic are PGP and that a lot of people respond well to treatment. I have to admit that I felt worse after first couple of sessions but they did warn me that could happen. I continued treatment every couple of weeks even when things had improved to prevent it coming back, they also helped with reflux. I hope you find something that works for you.http://www.bso.ac.uk/ Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/27011-pregnancy-pilates-for-pgpspd/#findComment-598335 Share on other sites
esme
I did pilates at the Dulwich Therapy Rooms (above Health Matters on Lordship Lane) and the classes were amazing, would highly recommend if still going. Otherwise try The Vale (Grove Vale) as they do lots of classes too.
