I have had dog muck in my front garden a couple of times in the last year and hate it just like the beer cans and other debris floating in off the streets. The dog stuff arrives overnight so you never see the owner to correct them but you can get a spray called 'Get Off' that deters the dogs, provided the animal still has its sense of smell.

How do you do anything about it if you see it happen?

How do you get their names and addresses?

I dislike having to put up with it, but there is little to be done if you confront the owner and they have no intention of becoming a responsible citizen.

How is it cruel if one has a house, with a decent sized garden and surrounded by at least three different parks within walking distance?? This is East Dulwich not Canary Wharf.

What if said dog and owner were returning from walk, already having pooped, picked and popped in bin. How do you prove that?

I've seen the guy on Marmora Road who does it - he's not new to the road but maybe he's increased the frequency of his dog walking or something. It's the balding guy who has a terrier - I've seen his dog do it a couple of times and he hasn't cleared it up. For some reason he always does it on the kerb just where I park my car and so when I get out I step right in it, even though I know it's there :X Fraid I'm way too scared of dogs to say anything....

Why don't you report him to the council and give a description and, if you can, times that he usually walks his dog.

I have contacted the council before about dog poo in the parks, having had too many trips to the park spoiled by either myself or my daughter stepping in some. I suggested they had some 'plain clothes' wardens in the parks early morning (when most dog walkers are around), issueing fines. I had a quick and positive response back saying they would indeed do that. IF you know someone is a repeat offender then why not pass on to the council to deal with him (although if you're up for it guess him being hassled by lots of residents to do the right thing can't hurt either!)

East Dulwich is definitely the worst place I've ever lived for dog poo - guess is the fact that there are lots of parks, hence lots of dog owners. And is not always the beefy men with scary dogs who offend - I've spoken to posh village ladies on 2 occasions in the park when I've witnessed them failing to pick up after their dogs.

Their dog may need to dump some more... so no excuses -- owners should be prepared to "bag&bin it" at anytime (i.e. they should maybe carry a few bags).

I think if people carry bags they are probably resposible dog owners and likely to use them.. Not sure what the dog ratio of dumps per walk is but I reckon it's about one.

The pavements in ED are pretty clean compared to where I used to live in Battersea where the pavements were covered in turds (mainly dropped by yoof walking their Staffs). I hate the filthy cur.

Nice idea - would only work if the dogs 'performed' in view of a policeman.... unless....

what about a national DNA database for dogs - the police could then easily track the culprits down!

Mike SE22 If the offender/fouler is seen by a Southwark Community Warden they can also be "on the spot fined" for fouling, however as usual it is catching the shitty shitters in the act which proves difficult. There really is no excuse, if you own a dog you know it is gonna crap at some point so owners should ALWAYS carry bags & be prepared to pick up after it, if not dont get a bloody dog, simple as.... God it makes me mad. (6) Also I wish male dogs wouldn't piss up my motorbike & cover, but I guess thats my silly fault for chaining the bike to a lamp-post :(

Rant over ~ GG

One thing that might help are more of the dog pooh bins. When I take my dog down Barry Road, if he has a dump at the top, I have to carry it all the way to the park before I can find a dog pooh bin and some areas have no dog pooh bins at all. You can't put the pooh in the normal bins because it's not going to be treated by whatever process they treat the stuff in the pooh bins.

Does anyone know what they actually do with all the pooh that is deposited in the pooh bins? I've always wondered.

I'd feel a bit funny dropping dog pooh in someone's bin! Imagine if they came out and started having a go. I'd feel really guilty and I thought it had to go through some kind of special process to make it safe - but knowing this council they probably just bung it in with the other rubbish anyway and stick it in landfill or an incinerator.

Chav,

I put my dog's deposit bag into the first bin I can find, so long as it's not garden waste. On the whole I think people would rather that than it not get picked up, but I understand your concerns about how it's treated. However, there is no excuse for dog excrement being left by the human owner, all dog owners should simply get into the habit of carrying bags at all times. Southwark even provide special pooh bags.

Moving on to the subject of litter in general; I do wish that littering humans and their progeny would stop dropping their food remains all over the pavement and in the parks, including but not limited to: chicken and pork bones, chewing gum, chocolate...oh and pills. All of these are potentially life threatening to dogs if consumed, not to mention the rats etc.. they will attract. Weil's disease, carried in rat urine, is a killer of humans.

First Mate,

I echo your sentiments. I've found that the best I can do is not litter myself, pick up crap that annoys me as long as it doesn't require me being too masochistic, and to leave it at that. There's little else you can do, really. If you let it wind you up too much it's bad. You can always report littered streets to 7525 2000 (council's enviro line) and report it, especially if it is a problem area. Nero

I thought you had to have means to dispose of poo, ie that if a dog poo warden saw you without means to pick it up it meants that you won't be so gives a fine. I think thats the way it is in belfast because anytime I walk my sisters dog I am well warned not to forget a bag even though she (the dog) doesnt go anywhere but her own back garden. The bag is never required but it is felt that I have to be able to show that I have the ability to clean up if necessary.
