Could someone post some details of what the pubs in Nunhead are like please. Quality of produce, atmosphere, normal stuff really.

I've been to Ye Olde Nunshead and what used to be Page 2 (although I've not been back since it had its makeover) but none of the others.

As far as I know there is also the Man of Kent, The Pyrotechnicists(?) Arms and the Golden Anchor. If I've missed any please let me know. Cheers.

Never go to the Pyrotechnicists on St Patrick's night unless you are fully fledged Irish - the reception is not very good. However, should you be wearing a dog collar, post-funeral, you will be made very welcome despite being English.

The Man of Kent is good for Irish Football matches and Holleran's (not sure if it's still there) used to be good for impromptu bloomer-showing dancing. Never been to Golden Anchor.

The Pyrotechnicists is a great pub any day of the week. Run by a really nice family and everyone knows each other in this place. It helps keep any local idiots out of the place. You probably got an unfriendly reception because during karaoke nights things get pretty serious, if you look like you can sing you might get a frosty reception !

The golden Anchor is worth a vist just for the experience, has a black checked floor, very twin peaks, and a hairdressers within. It has a very Caribbean feel. But the people were friendly and I have had some nice nights.

There is definately some historical black and white things going on in parts of Nunhead, But having spoken to some of the local kids/adults who grew up here through the 60's and 70's I am not surprised. Chased by a gang of lighty armed skin heads while out shopping for a pint of milk would leave a lasting impression on me too!!!

And Michael next time you visit the cemetery for a fun night out, would you mind putting the bodies back were you found them when you have finished doing whatever it is you do ...cheers !

Can put in a good word for the post-takeover Page 2 (aka The Village Inn). The welcome is warm and the atmosphere is great. And there doesn't seem to be the same favour towards one particular ethnic group (the Irish, of whom I am one) reported about elsewhere.

One caveat - due to some sort of limitation, there was only Guinness/Cider/Lager on tap the last time I was in. But they do have some good ales in bottles.

I find the Pyrotechnists positively unfriendly and weird and in a time warp.

Old Nun's Head is lovely but a bit... bare. Have yet to try the food there though.

Man of Kent - remember your cloth cap.

Page Two new version Village Inn, comfy but yet to get its atmosphere.

Agree with AllForNun re Golden Anchor. I did not stop for a drink.

And all of them and all pubs are much better since the government forced them to ban smoking.

The only law the government's passed in recent years I agreed with.

This reminds me that I haven't been in the Pyrotechnics for ages and need to pay it a visit soon. A good solid Irish pub with great Guinness and I remember doing the Karoake one night too and yes they do take it seriously.

Does anyone remember the Sailor Prince? Long gone I think. Run by a lovely West Indian man called Alvin and his wife back in the late 70s early 80s. Had loads of different real ales on tap and a great jukebox.

Anyone know what's happened to the Saturday night disco at the Village Inn (ex Page 2 Bar) ??

We went down there once, had a good time, passed the place on Thursday night and there was still a poster outside saying "disco every Saturday" or words to that effect - so we went down there on Saturday and no sign of a disco .... just a virtually empty bar ....

The barmaid just said there wasn't a disco (which was blindingly obvious) but the poster was still there ....

Surely not EVERYBODY was watching the ******* rugby??
