maxxi
Iceland are, along with Greggs sausage rolls, now offering cupcakes at 4 for ?1... the death knell for local mummsies surely? Expect this year's Xmas Fayres to be full of large brick-like Lamingtons and dainty Macaroons and anyone still baking CCs to be roundly mocked. Gidget
Don't get the Lamington love. Guess you need to be an Antipodean or from somewhere round about there. Anzac biscuits are quite nice though. So are friands/financiiers and they seem to hail from down there. Pickle
Lamingtons are only good when filled with whipped cream, I've never been a fan of the "diet" ones (as my Mum calls them!). I also prefer raspberry ones, which you don't often see in these parts. They've been around for ever (well, for my lifetime at least) over there, so it's amusing to see them popping up on posh cake stalls.Friands... Having grown up in NZ, lived there for 26 years before moving here, I had never heard of them until August when my Mum seemed to be buying them at every opportunity. Didn't think they were particularly nice. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/26539-cupcakes/page/3/#findComment-590201 Share on other sites

giggirl
I'm so over cupcakes. Ten years ago I actually queued outside the Magnolia Bakery on my way home from a night out (like a kebab but with icing). So over it. hpsaucey
WHat about muffins??? For example - chocolate chip. Promise so much - all those chocolatey bits on top and shiny sticky gooey-looking surface. You think - maybe this one will be different, maybe this time it'll be a good'un. Underneath - shitty crumby crumbly stuff that gets EVERYWHERE - guess this pleases passing pigeons - and is usually dried out! Like most cupcakes - style over substance ... discuss... Otta
Fair point, but not as bad as cupcakes IMO. People decorate cupcakes with little shiny balls which are meant to be edible, but are no easier to eat than a marble. Annette Curtain
I personally think that cupcakes and their obsessive production, are a manifestation of repressed sexual desires and frustrations.Otta alludes to this in his last post (as I read it) >decorate cupcakes with little shiny balls which are meant to be edible< If that's not "Vagazzles" on a cupcake then i'm somewhat mistaken.Actually, are Vagazzles edible ? MissDumpling
Watch out for cronuts - only a matter of time before they hit these shores. Selling on the black market in NY for $100 apiece. fishbiscuits
There is a way of trying a "cronut" for a lot less than $100... without even leaving East Dulwich...http://fishfingersarnie.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/cronut.html Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/26539-cupcakes/page/3/#findComment-666560 Share on other sites

Jamie33
Good to see the discussion is branching out from cupcakes! I'm interested in baking bread and making real cakes, any idea where might be good? (I live near Dulwich so local would be best.) fishbiscuits
ElmGrove - Cronuts from Ayres? Well I never! Next you'll be telling me that The Man Of Kent has Three Floyds beer on tap.Jamie33 - there's a local baking club called Band of Bakers. It's a good way to share your creations... even if they're a bit "lo-fi" like mine. Jamie33
Thanks for the tip fishbiscuits, that's great! I'll try and get a hold of them, any idea how?The cronuts sound great. I love croiscants (part of my life living in France) and who doesn't like doughnuts... Are the doughnuts rolled in cynamon? Bishton
Have you ever thought of taking online classes, there are some that are great and really affordable that you could do in addition to Band of Bakers (didn't I see them in a Paul Hollywood show recently?). Try maybe prettywittycakes.co.uk, something like that? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/26539-cupcakes/page/3/#findComment-667881 Share on other sites
