Just saw this in the ED issues section, sounds like a lovely idea but EXPENSIVE!! ?18 for kids and ?5 for each adult.. My one year old wouldnt be able to do any of the activities outside of pat the reindeer and get a pic, would have been better I thought to have a 0-2 price.. Or am I being a bit humbug about it all?

wow that is ridiculously expensive!!!

We went to the Selfridges one last year it was amazing but I don't think its on this year - it was under a tenner for all of us I think and that was redeemable if you spent money there. We are doing the Harrods one instead and that is a tenner as well, again redeemable against purchases (so may be able to buy one cup of coffee then or something whilst elbowing all the tourists out the way!)

I am pretty sure there is one at the Glades in Bromley that is meant to be cheap and good? Also we have previously gone to school winter fairs in December that have had Santas - we went to one at Lyndhurst Primary School in Camberwell 2 years ago that had lots of reindeer and huskies too (kids could ride the reindeer). And only ?1 entrance. So defo worth looking at posters on trees etc for local school/library grottos instead.

Saw it & v tempted to take Bugglet - think she'll enjoy the extra activities (decorating a gingerbread snowman and making a name badge or similar) as well as the reindeer and FaceTime with the big man (sorry... Thought of the phrasing and found it too funny not to put in - seriously I don't use that sort of lingo!).

Plus, the convenience of it being so local/well located with no parking charges, makes me happy to pay a little bit more than I would for a more conventional grotto.

I thought it was slightly expensive too, but I really wanted to do something different for my little ones this year and queuing up for 45 minutes or longer to see Santa only for 3 minute chat and present is NOT fun!

At least with this Grotto it seems the children will have different activities to do before they see Santa and get a present.

I like that there is something for me too !...Mulled wine and mince pies always works!

But above all else its LOCAL and just that little bit different.

Anyway I think I will phone up just to make sure what the children actually get, as all in all it does seem it will be worth it....

Hmmm...

No doubt your second ever message on the forum will be to tell us that you've just been and it was wonderful and LOCAL and worth every penny. Or maybe that you'd be willing to pay twice as much and that we should all support this fantastic LOCAL business.

Think I'd rather save my pennies. Christmas is a magical time of year for kids, you don't need to spend this much money to enjoy the festivities. Santa at the school fair at Goose Green has been enough for my son the past few years, and there's always other activities too which don't break the bank and get put back into the PTA to support all the kids.

I appreciate it is a lot of work to get something like this off the ground but the entry price for a 30 minute event is way beyond what I would want to spend on a visit to Santa, despite all the little extras on offer (excluding the photo!)

However, I am sure the event will be well attended despite the hefty price tag.

1. Not sure all capitals is required

2. To say you are frightened of us is a bit silly

3. As We are the people actually potentially forking out the cash to go to such an event we are allowed an opinion. I think the price point is WAY off! For me it would be a very expensive few minutes as my one year old wouldn't be able to participate in the activities mostly so I think a reduced price for a single 0-2 would have been sensible and siblings who are 0-2 of children who have paid full price should be free is where I think it would become more reasonable and you might get more people along. I'm definitely attracted to the fact it is local and that dulwich park is such a great place but for the price for my one year old I think I'll keep looking. Maybe when he is older and can actually participate it might seem slightly more worthwhile.

Good luck with your event and remember its only as good as the people that attend it so hopefully you will get enough people buying tickets

Ouch, my ears. Why are you shouting decorative art? I'm a long-timer on this forum and I can't see that anyone has lost sight of what it's for in this thread. The EDF is to give current, relevant local & national information & for local people to express opinions on that information. That's exactly what's happening here. The people posting are potential customers - whippersnappers would do well to listen to their opinion. I really hope that you have nothing to do with this event (though from your posting history you do seem to be closely connected) because if you do your last posts aggressive tone and shouting may well have lost you some of those customers.

So, in the spirit of above; IMO the price is absolutely outrageous. ?18 per child & ?5 per adult? Seriously? How will a family with 2 children afford nearly ?50 in total just to go see Santa, let alone the families with more children (of whom there are a good fair few round here). It's in Dulwich Park, in the middle of a very wealthy area so I'm sure that Whippersnappers will get customers, but how cruel to the vast majority of kids who use the park and will be excluded from this lovely event but will be able to see and get a sense of what they're missing out on. Hardly a community thing now is it? Both Harrods and Selfridges are cheaper - surely that fact alone tells you something?

What annoys me is that they could charge considerably less & still (im sure) make plenty of money. It is just plain greed.

Like Lapland UK who also charge a huge amount for a family if 4.

These companies are cashing in on Christmas & getting way too greedy. Think about how many people per hour thru plan to have passing through, over however many days they are there, less whatever rent they are paying. Just short of ?50 per family. Raking it in. Reindeer feed must be very expensive!!

Vote with your feet people!

Just looked on the website, I'm particularly taken with the idea of real reindeers! It looks like a lot of fun but really that is prohibitively expensive and I can't believe that the photo with Father Christmas isn't included in the price, can't help thinking it would be more apt if you got to meet Scrooge inside.
Lapland UK is ?65. Each (ie for grown ups too). Crazy!! For ?18 you'd better get a pretty good pressie from Santa. We'll be going to the garden centre near us for ?8.50 (per child - why is anyone paying for an adult at these places?) Santa will be in the woods on the nature trail. Fab!

Although it may appear "opportunistic" to use this thread to raise awareness of the Link Romania Fill a Shoebox Campaign ..here goes.

Although times are tougher for many of us out there, it clearly seems that some people still think they can make a buck or two, trading on the 'Magic of Christmas' to make parents feel guilty if they aren't spending ridiculous amounts on absolute Xmas tosh. As posters have said, there are school Xmas Fairs, there will be Dulwich lights, shop windows, Xmas Carols and endless other Christmassy stuff that children will really enjoy. All schools do lots at Christmas time to enter into the spirit and all children, irrespective of the schools they attend, normally have a great time - shows, concerts, Xmas lunch, Xmas trees, music...

The advertised event looks horrible - save your money or use a bit of it to fill a shoebox. Please watch the video below so you can put things in perspective.

We have so much as a nation, and we can worry over the most minor insignificant things to do with providing pleasure for our children.

Watch the video link and then if you want to contribute a box, bring it down to The Hamlet in the Village.

Thanks so much.

It makes me really sad that people unfairly set such hefty price tags to these local events. With 3 small children it would cost us an absolute fortune to go as a family! We've been to Harrods which was ?10, adults free, and we got the money back to spend in store afterwards. The kids got a book and chocolate coins and we bought some tree decorations. I really hope that a good slice of the profits are going to charities, homeless and needy children at this time of year. For those of you who decide to purchase tickets, please use some of your spare cash for something a bit more worthwhile as well whilst you're spending. Shame.... It would have been lovely to have a local grotto in the park, open to all children for just a few pounds.

I usually go into the soft play places and play too if I've had to pay... so maybe just ask to see Santa too if you've had to pay to go in?

I'm pretty sure that you coiuld see Santa for free at Herne Hill market last year, and they had a goat too. Granted, it's not quite as good as a reindeer!
