Sally Eva
This is the schedule for November. Everyone who tries it says good things about it. A guide is here: https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/66-in-a-20mph-zone/To join in email PCSO Kevin Phillips on [email protected]. He's a really amiable guy, kind to his fellow human beings, children and small fluffy animals. Just about everyone in fact except speeding drivers. He'll alter the roads, dates or times to suit his volunteers. Pugwash
Having done a couple of speed watches with Kevin, it is an interesting way to spend a couple of hours observing people's driving habits. You get to use a speed gun. The Barry Area Residents' Association (BARA) instigated the speed watch in Barry Road and we were based at Etherow Street junction and a few others with local councillors were based at Upland Road. siousxiesue
This reminds me of the woman sick of speeding drivers in her road, she held up a hair dryer and drivers, from a distance, thought it was a speed camera! malumbu
A fine line between supporting your community and vigilantism, Got a mate who takes pictures of people driving on their phones and sends them into the met. He has had some convictions and even attended court once. But part of me is saying get a life.Personally average speed cameras would sort this out in a relatively short time. Why is HMG relying on us to take risks? And of the roads you list the only one that particularly bothers me is Sydenham Hill; my personal bugbears are Forest Hill Road, Perry Vale (LBL), Cator Road and some of the other places I cycle in Bromley.I'm not necessarily anti us doing our bit but feel that there needs to be greater political will. And personally I'd happily crush some of the cars where the drivers don't give a fig about other road users and pedestrians. PS I was looking for the black chap who cycles round telling off bad drivers. He featured in a documentary about cycling a few years ago - I'm sure the Daily Hate did a feature on him and called him something like the enforcer. I've seen him out and about and it makes you cycle even more sensibly (he criticises cyclists too)PPS you should also clock the speeds of electric scooters. Sally Eva
I've got a dim memory that the police told the lady with the hair dryer not to do it -- she might cause an accident I understand what you say about the dangers of vigilantism, which seems particularly out of hand at the moment. Speedwatch is run by the Met, always has at least one and often two trained PCSOs, and is funded by TfL. That seems enough supervision to be going on with. malumbu
Thanks Sally. Sadly there are numerous people, perhaps in the majority (and even on this website). who are happy to exploit any excuse to have a go at 'sanctimonious' cyclists (and anyone else who doesn't fit in with their agendas such as tree huggers).Perhaps they would like to share some views on this thread! Dogkennelhillbilly
"Personally average speed cameras would sort this out in a relatively short time"Not in London it wouldn't. Practically no-one is averaging 30mph+ over half a mile in ED. It's all nobbers accelerating up to 40 and zooming around corners, then stopping at the lights 200 feet down the road. None of them get to their destination quicker. As you say it's the 100 yards at 50 which is the problem. jane21
Do the community speed watchers also monitor bike speed as I am not sure that the 20 mile an hour applies to bikes but may be someone can enlighten me or whether they should be allowed to bicycle through red lights? I think the police in royal parks give out tickets to bikes, but not sure how the community would do this as there are no number plates to identify. I have seen some awful incidents in peckam with bicyclists at speed and pedestrians colliding. KidKruger
I did the speed watch with Kevin and I clocked 60 speeding cars at Goose Green. The fastest was doing 43 mph. This is in broad daylight early evening over a 90min period.Would love to do it later when I am fairly sure some cars do between 50 and 65 mph. Clutterqueen
Just saying as I've just seen this tonight live on the forum. KidKruger
I commented on this tread on 16/9, having seen earlier posts which enabled me to contact the police officer and do a speed watch with him.But you're saying that because you didn't see the earlier posts that thread must have somehow been hidden ?If it was hidden how did I, and others (whose posts are there to see) see the thread and participate in it ?!I must be misinterpreting what you're saying. Pugwash
tedfudge Yesterday, 09:16PMWould like this done in Barry road The speed some drivers and motor bikes Do are outrageous and overtaking on Wrong side of the roadPlease see my post of 30th August. I personally took part in 2 road watches with Kevin and I am aware several other residents took part in others and were concentrating on the area of Barry Road between the Rye and Underhill Road.Suggest that tedfudge contact Kevin and suggest another road watch in Barry Road. Sally Eva
Many thanks to those resurrecting this thread and I'm very cheered that so many have had a go at Speedwatch. There's a new proposed timetable for October out now and I've just posted it on the What's On forum. For more info contact PCSO Kevin Phillips on [email protected].Kevin's timetables are very flexible and he will alter times and places on request. The speed guns work in the dark (and the rain) but the team also have to note the registration number, vehicle make and colour and (obvs) that is much harder in the dark. ed26
Agree that the 0-50-0 drivers are far more dangerous than someone bumbling along at 25 in a 20 zone, but they are much harder to catch. They aren't going to zoom off if there's a speed gun in sight, and the chances of them getting caught during that short burst at 50 are minimal. Always seems to be the Merc and BMWs! (No offence to Merc & BMW drivers on here as long as you aren't a culprit).Dulwich Village a few weeks ago. Mercedes pulls up in the right-turn lane at the junction into Calton Ave. Failed to get away quickly as someone was still crossing the road. Had to pull in behind me, so I stuck solidly to 20. He was flashing his lights and shaking his fist out of the window. Finally managed to get past me by going the wrong side of the bollard near the infant school, only for me to pull in front of him again as I was in the right-turn lane into East Dulwich Grove and he was in the main queue. I can't get the mentality of putting people's lives at risk, with zero effect of getting through traffic more quickly. They do this on the East Dulwich Road / Crystal Palace Road / Adys Road crossroads too. It scares me as it's a very busy crossing for parents with small kids. Wish there was an easy way to catch them. Pugwash
Needs minimum of 2 people - one with gun and other to write down registration plate. Sally Eva
I think at least sometimes Kevin does it with one volunteer. Maybe while training volunteers he needs two.
