I was particulary appauled by the electrical aversion therapy. I've read this treatment was also used for alcoholics. I read a case from the 70s in Ireland where a gay man recieved this treatment although the article says this treatment was abandoned, I will try to find it. This young guy was looking for a cure. Its got me thinking about Electro convulsion therapy which is still used often without choice. I would hope nowadays that being gay is no longer associated with something wrong.

I can't quite understand how this has become an issue with politicians considering this is no longer used and seemed to be done through choice. Unlike many people who recieve it in psychiatric care without choic. Hopefully this will be a subject the government will also get involved with.

I find this very worrying, Barclay bank closed down this charity for talking therapy, which is being described as aversion therapy, provided for people who are not comfortable with there attraction to same sex. Banks do not have to give a reason to close accounts, when a decision has been made with a legal charity to close there account on grounds of behaving in a way they do not agree with, if that is the case, It opens up a whole lot of questions around these powers to close accounts.

I find it very worrying that 66,000 have signed a petition supporting it.....

It says

'The charity?s registered statement of objectives says it exists ?for the purpose of empowering individuals and churches to make, and to promote, lifestyle choices consistent with Christian living?.'

To promote no less....reminds me of the Section 28 debacle!

Heres a link about this charity, I can undestand people signing this petition, I do not believe this therapy to be linked to gay conversion therapy.

Seembeen I cannot see the link between section 28. People choose to go to therapies for many things they struggle with, hthere behaviour, thinking etc. Many feel it is the wrong treatment and try some other kind. People have a choice. Often questions are

asked before a talking therapy session beginss. These questions are based on behaviour. A number is asked to describe how person is feeling. This maybe to see difference on individual by end of sessions but it is also based on the norm, it is the same standard questions. Of course there are many people who this will help and many people who do not feel this has helped.

In this climate where people need help regardless of the cause, we must remember this is not a forced treatment, and it is certainly not up to banks to decide what is appropriate.

As far as I'm concerned section 28...where schools were not allowed to 'promote' homosexuality...is the same as saying 'promote' a Christian lifestyle...

".... a local authority "shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality" or "promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship"....

I was really hoping that this thread would die a deserved death, notwithstanding niledynodely popping back in to stir it up again with her faux "I'm not against homosexuality but won't someone think of the children" shtick. But no, it seems it's back trotting out the same old tropes...

For anyone who wants to understand some of the terms being thrown around in this latest discussion, please see a joint statement issued some years ago by all the key organisations in the UK that deal with psychology and psychoanalysis. It explains that conversion therapy is the umbrella term for a type of talking therapy or activity which attempts to change sexual orientation or reduce attraction to others of the same sex. Exactly what the charity being discussed seems to do.

https://www.psychotherapy.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/ukcp-conversion-therapy.pdf

It goes on to say:

There is no good evidence this works and we believe it has the potential to cause harm. Often these approaches are based on religious interpretations about sexuality rather than on a researched and informed understanding of sexual orientation.

Licenced professionals in the UK consider this sort of treatment to be unethical and the leaflet goes on to explain why that is. That's why it only lives on, in the UK at least, by way of charities acting in largely unqualified capacities.

Nope I can't see anything on link, where there it mentions anything regarding people looking for help regarding problems they have with same sex attractions. Boris Johnson says he will look into any treatmeant that falls into gay conversion therapy. This charity deny that is what they are. Isn't this link about trans people. Siduhe, its a bit strange you post on a thread you wished had died.

We are very quickly moving into a world where those asking for acceptance, understanding and a voice are set on removing other peoples rights for the same things.

Nope I can't see anything on link, where there it mentions anything regarding people looking for help regarding problems they have with same sex attractions.

Really? You can't see the whole section in the consensus statement about the difference between going to see a licenced therapist in the UK who can help people struggling with their same-sex attraction, and going to an unlicenced group whose aim is to help those same people supress or eliminate that same-sex attraction? I'll give you a clue - it's in the section marked "Getting Help". I'll check the link but I wonder if we're even looking at the same document.

I would love not to be posting on this thread again - I did the last time because of the horrible insinuations being made that non-heterosexual people are some kind of greater threat to children and the safety of children than heterosexual people. That's out and out bigotry of the worst kind and I called it out for what it was.

TE44, I don't understand how but I think we must be looking at different documents - I've linked to a 2016 statement by all the leading therapy groups in the UK condemning the sort of treatment being offered by the Core Issues Trust. There are two mentions of trans people in passing, but that isn't the focus of the statement.

And Mike Davidson who runs the therapy sessions at Core Issues Trust is neither a qualified doctor, nor a registered therapist.

Siduhe, I am not looking at the same document on your link. Above is some information on Mike Davidson, I find it very interesting,at times both sides being put accross seem to have the same interest, as in allowing people , especially people who struggle, to queation find, be comfortable and accept there own sexuality. My concern is choice. And of course banks closing accounts because of pressure from groups who believe themselves to be oppressed. As is in the first link I put up, what about countries where it is illegal to have same sex relationships. I actually would like to think more open minded countries can have a conversation with these countries in the hope there can be change. And I realise this can run similtaniously? With behaviour in our own country. We are at a time when choice feels no longer open for debate. In this case I do not believe there is any force and I have heard nothing from victims of this help offered.

Snowy if they are outside of charity law surely action would have been taken to remove status. I don't believe this is the case.

Kk if people themselves have problems with there sexuality surely if there relationship with there chosen therapist is consensual its up to them.

    • I went there many years ago and it had long since been past its best as an idyllic spot.  But perhaps out of season you will find something peaceful away from the golf courses and British bars.  Others may be less cynical! If you get a car and go up to the Alentejo there are some wonderful hill towns, but nicer in the spring when the meadows are in flower.

    • If you're looking for stunning, long-lasting and eco-friendly raised beds for your garden I can strongly recommend Ben (gardener-carpenter based in Camberwell) who recently made a set of raised beds / planter boxes for my garden! We had a consultation on the phone, he shared some ideas and options plus prices and then I sent him my desired measurements for the planters and he had them built and delivered to me within 2 weeks. He can also fill with compost and help with planting selection and sourcing. I'm so happy with these and Ben's fantastic craftmanship! He uses a wood preservation technique called Yakisugi to not only ensure the timber has long life but create a beautiful striking effect by bringing out the grain. He also uses reclaimed wood and natural oil to treat the boards, so they are safe/perfect for food-growing. See the photos below and if you would like some planters or other pieces built for your own garden, get in touch with him on his contact details here: email: [email protected] phone: 07757268809 Whether you’re after raised beds, compost bays or garden furniture, Ben's your man to create something unique, durable, and sustainable. I can't recommend his work highly enough!
