Plea for advice

Due to travel to Italy tomorrow as a family only to find out today that my 5 year old sons passport has expired. The passport office aren?t able to help, not issuing same day passports and offices are shut due to COVID. Can you convincingly argue on any points here? https://www.gov.uk/get-a-passport-urgently

If not then I'd get onto your travel people and ask to postpone. It's too risky to hide your child in the boot/suitcase etc.
