I?m surprised to learn it?s owned by Southwark Council. Whilst it?s categorised as a public open space, it is not included in the list of Southwark open spaces on Southwark Council website, neither is there a Southwark sign at the entrance. Prior to Sainsburys being built, the land belonged to Kings and I had always thought the whole site had been sold to Sainsbury?s or partially swapped with the Sainsburys sporting club facilities in Dulwich Village which was transferred to Kings.

Sainsburys do have an agreement with the council to maintain the park but that was a condition of planning permission being granted.

There's a link to the legal deed of 16/10/1990 made in connection with the planning application at https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,1925977.

King's College is said then (introductory para.3) to be the freeholder. There is also the covenant concerning management of the park's opening.

The Sainsbury's planning application 1992 Section 106 - legal agreement between Southwark Council and Sainsbury's.

Sainsbury's are on the hook for opening St.Francis Park at sunrise, closing it at sunset. Maintaining it. Litter picking, etc.

Southwark council is on the hook for enforcing this but doesn't. I had a number of meetings over the years with council officers to try and get any traction. I wrote to Sainsbury's head office, etc.

It's actually in ChampionHill ward (previously South Camberwell warD) but the Councillors hadn't shown any interest in fixing this. It should be a council priority ot raise it to a Green Flag standard.

Checking with Green flag people even privately maintain parks can be awarded this - current administration pretended it couldn't.

    • Just seen them! Moved into Barry Rd 33 years ago and remember watching dozens of them in the sky as we sat in the back garden the first evening. Look out for them every year. Lifts your spirits when they arrive.
    • Aleksandra was the driving force behind the conversion of what was a nice but very outdated house into what is now my beautiful, vibrant and modern home. I cannot recommend her enough- she was a pleasure to work with- she has an uncanny eye for detail and her sense of style is unparalleled. She knew where to push me beyond my “safe beige” colours but always kept my personality and preferences in mind. She sourced fabric / colours / lighting designs , she found local options for spectacular interior ideas in the kitchen , display cabinets , bathrooms , bedrooms and wardrobes. She never went beyond budget and was very timely in her execution. The result was a beautiful home that even after 8 years looks as stunning as it did when first put together. It is as liveable as it is beautiful and none of it would have been possible with Alexandra. I truly could not recommend her highly enough- there are few people with her work ethic and style. Thank you Alexandra !
    • The Lib Dems are against tightening visa requirements to live in the UK and against shrinking the university sector, and also (at least in Dulwich) against housing being built if it means that foreign students live in it. 🤷
