Also agree with RoseH, sunlover and bonniebird. Have never lived in an area where I have seen so many roaming cats in front of houses and on the roads. Have also never heard of so many cats being killed and injured by cars mostly, but also dogs. I would be very reluctant to get another cat and let it go out now, due in main to foxes/ cars, not dogs so much. Foxes do a good job of keeping down the rat population. Cats are useful in keeping down the mouse population. I do not like it either when they kill birds. I only had one cat who did that, he brought home a pigeon through the cat flap when he was quite young. Otherwise he only killed the odd mouse that appeared in the house and for that he was useful. I kept him in at night, after a couple years of letting him go out whenever he wanted, after realizing that his night/early hours roaming were causing him to get injuries. Minor ones but I still had to keep taking him to the vet. He had many abcesses caused by bites from other cats. He was also a neutered male. It was only in this area that he encountered problems with other cats.

I don't agree with the encouragement, or should that be enforcement, of rescue places to always get two kittens. That in itself bumps up the cat population. There are too many people out there who just get a cat as an easy option for a pet. They don't want a smelly litter tray in the house, so they get a cat flap and force the cat to exit the house in all weathers in order to relieve itself. I hate other cats coming in my garden to dump their mess. My cats always had a litter tray and they loved using it, esp. when I got one of the covered ones. You need to get them using it from a young age.

Your missing something...common sense! In reply to "all dogs should be muzzled etc or am I missing something etc."

Oh for goodness sake people...

I used to hate and I mean HATE dogs, couldn't see the point & thought dog owners were ridiculous people with too much time on their hands, flea ridden houses, dirty duvets, tacky pictures, hairs in their food and a drab, dull existence...

I'm a mother of two, I work full-time, I have a fabulous, interesting, diverse family and a wonderful busy life...

For some reason that I cannot fathom...I got a dog! I now have two dogs, I cannot tell you the joy they bring me, I've have gone from being "one of you dog haters" to defending these incredible creatures to the max! I get really fed up with these rants, my dogs are well socialised, trained, chihuahuas and no they don't yap or bite everyone in sight (I heard that stereotype before you thought it!) I come across people every day in the park who sadly discourage their children from looking at the dog and instil irrational fear into them and I also meet some fantastic, well rounded, parents who actively encourage and educate their children on how to correctly approach and appreciate an animal. I wish I'd have done that with my family years ago. My message..."Who told YOU that your superior to another crearure? It's never too late to learn!" x

No...after I had decided, I researched and got the correct breed for my lifestyle. I went to a reputable breeder, checked that it wasn't a puppy farm, met the Mother & bought my beautiful little Nancy.

The second one was rehomed with me, he had loads of issues (not disimilar to Bobby who recently appeared on Paul O' Grady, Battersea programme.)In fact the day I brought him home he tried to bite my son. I spent a lot of time socialising him, trainig him and treating him like a dog! I never gave up, he had entropian (where the euelashes grow inward) and required surgery and I had him neutered. If my eyelashes were constantly poking in my eye and I couldn't get them out I'd probably be irritated enough to snap...in fact I can snap if my mascara goes in my eye...that is "chihuahua owner stereotype" joke, by the way! Suffice as to say right now he's adorable although we still have some learning to do but as I type he's happily sitting in his bed, covered in eau de fox poo, after a long walk and a sly roll! Oh yeah and both dogs adore each other.

You are a nice person already! :)

ETA: Sorry, just realised your post was probably ironic (?) or something, but I've had two large glasses of red (blush)

I agree with you Pommie, but I think that telling people they have to take 2 kittens just adds to the cat population in whatever local area they end up in. It's rather short-sighted of the rescue places to do that. Not everyone wants 2 cats at the same time.

Maybe some of you could take your pathetic posturing off to the Lounge and respect the fact that someone has lost a pet to awful circumstances.

Steph you really do have my deepest sympathy. Try to focus on the lovely times you had with Gatwick

Hope you aren't including me in that, I am so sorry for Gatwick and his owners, I would be distraught if it were my cat :(

    • If you read my post I expect a compromise with the raising of the cap on agricultural property so that far less 'ordinary' farmers do not get caught  Clarkson is simply a high profile land owner who is not in the business as a conventional farmer.  Here's a nice article that seems to explain things well  https://www.sustainweb.org/blogs/nov24-farming-budget-inheritance-tax-apr/ It's too early to speculate on 2029.  I expect that most of us who were pleased that Labour got in were not expecting anything radical. Whilst floating the idea of hitting those looking to minimise inheritance tax, including gifting, like fuel duty they also chickened put. I'm surprised that anyone could start touting for the Tories after 14 years of financial mismanagement and general incompetence. Surly not.  A very low bar for Labour but they must be well aware that there doesn't need to be much of a swing form Reform to overturn Labour's artificially large majority.  But even with a generally rabid right wing press, now was the opportunity to be much braver.
    • And I worry this Labour government with all of it's own goals and the tax increases is playing into Farage's hands. With Trump winning in the US, his BFF Farage is likely to benefit from strained relations between the US administration and the UK one. As Alastair Campbell said on a recent episode of The Rest is Politics who would not have wanted to be a fly on the wall of the first call between Angela Rayner and JD Vance....those two really are oil and water. Scary, scary times right now and there seems to be a lack of leadership and political nous within the government at a time when we really need it - there aren't many in the cabinet who you think will play well on the global stage.
    • I look to the future and clearly see that the law of unintended consequences will apply with a vengeance and come 2029 Labour will voted out of office. As someone once said 'The trouble with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money'.
