How are people still surprised / outraged by this? Happens every year.

The logic is pretty simple.

Some people like to budget and so, to spread the cost of Christmas, start stocking up week by week once autumn hits, taking advantage of any special offers as they go.

Supermarkets respond to this with an array of special offers, particularly on stuff like tins of chocolates, in the hope that whoever bought them in October will have eaten them by the time Christmas comes round, and they'll have to buy a second tin.

I'm going to the Liberty Christmas shop today.

Rosie, getting all the best baubles since 1995

El pibe, I often end up doing that, ironically with more close relatives and friends ie those for whom I spend ages looking and rejecting lots of things till after the event on the grounds that the present isnt nice enough. They end up with something ok but two years late!

    • We have a very large collection - anything in particular you are looking for?
    • I'm thinking of going to India at Christmas and it's been 18 years since I last visited. So long ago, I can hardly remember where I went (I was there for 8 weeks...). Has anyone been to the South recently? I'm thinking Kerala, as we fancy some beach action.
    • If it's not bolted down it gets stolen, terrible. Some people have no respect for others property.  Hope you reported it to the Police and got a crime reference number, what did they say?
    • Try pavement, this is London, not the US. The Mayor increased his proportion of council tax in 2025/26 to pay for "more" haha PC's but my understanding is they were cut not increased. A rouse by the Mayor to take more and give nothing in return.  Troubling and far too common here.  Just be careful where you get it out
