Hi all,

My partner and I are about to submit a planning application for a side extension on our ground floor flat in East Dulwich. We note that the majority of the deigns people go for include a small courtyard/lightwell outside the groundfloor bedroom window. We would like to utilise this space within the flat itself, perhaps as an en suite or walk in wardrobe, but we understand the reason people have the courtyard, is to provide an 'outlook' from that bedroom. We're hoping we can get around this by having a window above the roofline of the extension, providing plenty of natural light and even a bit of an outlook given the property steps down at the back. Attached is a photo of a project we found in Fulham that did this successfully.

Has anyone had or know of anyone that has had this design approved on a ground floor flat in Southwark? Or does anyone have any advice/experience they could share?

Thank you very much in advance!

    • But as noted before on other threads, surely  it isn't the best use of council workers' time to come and clean up every time somebody reports dog mess? If everybody reported every incident, the workers would be constantly going backwards and forwards. There is dog mess everywhere round here. Plus it's not exactly an incentive to the people leaving the mess, if they know someone else will come and clear it up. It just adds to our council tax bills. There must be better ways of addressing the problem, like more dog mess bins. Then the workers presently responding to one off requests to remove one off piles of s**t could be more usefully employed in emptying those bins. I do understand that the people with these incontinent dogs probably wouldn't use the bins anyway. What do other boroughs do? What do other countries do?

    • Really interesting..  I recently saw a campaign for more places for teens to hang out. At first I thought there are plenty of places but that really isn't true, especially since consecutive governments reduced funding into youth clubs and community centres so most are privately run by charities now. More needs to be done, as screens are fine for a while but can be so addictive and hinder social interaction
    • Definitely problems caused by tree and clay soil, hot summers = less moisture in the soil etc
