Social cycle rides Saturday July 4th

Recommended Posts

Three rides led by Southwark Cyclists' ride leaders: safe, friendly and interesting. Now tweaked to work in a post-Covid world.

We are offering 3 different rides on Saturday 4th July. Only 5 people per ride ? but at least we should get 15 people riding. You MUST book using Eventbrite. Please if you find you cannot make the ride you have booked, and CANCEL. That way we do not wait around, and possibly may be able to let an extra person on the ride.

The first (Ride 1) is the 5 Parks Loop, led by Bruce. It will start and finish in Peckham Square and be two hours long, 10am to 12 noon. The plan is to do a loop that includes Peckham Rye Park, Dulwich Park, Herne Hill Velodrome, Brockwell Park, Ruskin Park and Burgess Park. There will be lots to see and plenty of quiet bits. Southwark Cyclists first did this route in May 2013 (see report at http://healthyrider.weebly.com/ride-reports-aprilmay-2013.html) and have ridden it several times since. Route on Google maps at

Ride no 2 is from Canada Water to Tate Modern and St Pauls. It will be led by Philippa and start and finish in Deal Porter Square next to Canada Water Library and opposite Canada Water Station, SE16 7AR, again 10am to 12 noon. The route will cross 4 bridges, starting out along the Thames Path, then north over Tower Bridge and along Cycleway C3 to Southwark Bridge. South over the bridge and turn right onto Sumner St to the Tate. The back across Millennium Bridge on foot ? required ? to St Pauls. Then taking the backstreet route to Blackfriars bridge crossing south onto C6 and back to Canada Water via Q1 (now Cycleway 1). Route at

Ride 3 is longer and starts at the Cutty Sark at 9.30 am heading for the Royal Docks . Royal Docks + Ride. Leader Jamie. This will be a repeat of the ride in 2019 (see Report from Sept 21st 2019) and also March this year. The probable route at

The route follows the Thames Path to Woolwich, then ferry (or tunnel if no ferry) to north bank and round to Gallions Point. Along north side of Albert and Victoria Docks and probably stop at The Crystal (in the news recently as possible new HQ building for the Mayor). Over the Lower Lea Crossing, possible diversion to Trinity Buoy Wharf if time, round the Isle of Dogs east side and through the Greenwich Foot tunnel back to Cutty Sark.

I?m a huge fan of cycling, but sending a group along the Thames Path between Greenwich and North Greenwich is not practical. I walked this route recently and the path narrows at various points to a degree that makes it difficult for two pedestrians to pass. I witnessed an effective gridlock of cyclists going in opposite direction.

I think that people will find the other two rides enjoyable and interesting.

    • Cheques are still the safest way to send money to others if you want to make a 'thing' of it. At Christmas or birthdays a card with a cheque is the most effective present to distant god children or extended family, for instance when you don't know what they have or need - made out to the parent if you don't think they have an account yet. Of course you can use electronic transfer, often, to parents if you set it up, but that doesn't quite have the impact of a cheque in the post. So a cheque still has a use, I believe, even when you have very much reduced your cheque writing for other purposes.
    • I believe "Dulwich" is deemed where Dulwich library is situated so left at Peckham rye and straight up Barry Road
    • The solution for the cost of duvet washing is for each person to have their own single duvet like in Scandinavia.  Then you can wash the duvet in your own washing machine. Get a heated drying rack if you don’t have a tumble dryer.
    • Depends which route you take!
