Not sure what this great screed tells us. It isnt how you experience the easyjet website.

I find the easyjet website easy to work through and you can swiftly and easily identify the costs of flights.

As noted above, there are few back office staff, so few people who can deal with out of the ordinary requests. So, such things take a long time to deal with.

The asumptions is that most people will NOT take check-in luggage. Hence you pay for the nose to pay for check in luggage and the insistence on one piece of cabin luggage each.

If you book in advance, flights are often cheaper, if you are on the email list and can take advantage of cheaper offers, then you can get some bargains.

However, you get what you pay for. Dont judge the cheap carriers against the full-service carriers, they provide a different service.

Aer Lingus was haemoraging money using a full service model, Ryanair were taking all of their short haul business and they were not competative on the long haul transatlantic routes. They have moved to more of a cheap-carrier model, cutting back office staff and so costs. Having said that, Ryanair wants to take them over and there has been a running battle between the two.

I suspect that Ryanair will win out, it wants the long haul routes to feed its short haul service into. Short haul will be branded Ryanair. Long haul will keep the Aer Lingus as the bargain approach doesnt really work on long haul.

Thanks for that.

I presume 'First through the gate' (1 x ?0.00) means no seat is allocated to you and you join a rugby-scrum type race to get a seat.

However, the prices for Flexi do appear straight forward although why it costs more to fly back from Malaga than to fly to Malaga is unclear (local taxes).

"This Great Screed" was a request by silver fox. It took about 30 seconds to get this page and it seems to be pretty clear. Whether there are hidden charges is hard to tell since they maybe hidden by definition ! :-) . I think pricing varies by many parameters including demand, time of day, routing, typical wind speed etc.

I don't mind Easyjet, it still provides a better service than RYanair, and I've had too many hideous delays with RYanair such that I boycott them unless there is literally on other carrier for the route.

I usually fly Aer Arran to Ireland. They've been taken over by Aer Lingus so I'll be most upset RYanair take them over as it's down to that no other carrier situation. Booooooo

OK, I've managed to explain your extra charges...

> 2 Adult(s): GBP 20.00 GBP 52.99 GBP 145.98

Your base fare, as expected.

> Handling Fee: GBP 24.00

Admin fee - standard cheapo airline money grabbing. The practise of not including this is the advertised fares is being banned in the UK.

> Pre-Paid Bag Fee: GBP 0.00

No charge as it is included in the PLUS fare you selected.

> Sms Confirmation Fee: GBP 1.00

You had to actively select this. You can't blame Aer Lingus for 'sneaking' in a charge when you actively select something!

> PLUS fee: GBP 68.00

You selected their 'PLUS' upgrade, which gave you free seat selection and 1 Checked bag up to 20kg free. Again you actively selected this, so you can't really complain.

> Seating Fee: GBP 8.00

Aer Lingus charge a premium for the better seats on a plane. You selected these seats. You got charged extra.

So, while I agree with you on the admin fee, all the other 'extra' charges were upgrades you selected. That's how the cheap flight model works - a no-frills base price and you can select extra upgrades as you require. You could have flown to Dublin for ?85 each (?73 base fare + ?12 admin fee), but you added in extras.

I'm not sure you have much to complain about here, really.

I don't really get this moan, or at least don't think it should be Easyjet focused. British Airways don't let you change a name at all - they make you buy a new ticket (although you can claim your taxes back for the unused ticket minus an admin fee)

At least Easyjet give you an option, which can be beneficial when the price hasn't increased too much.

As you are changing the booking, you pay a ?35 fee for changing and you pay the current price of the flight, less a deduction for the price you previously paid for that flight.

Changing a name is cancelling the previous booking for person A and making a new booking for person B.

You can't just swop flights from one person to another.

It's not so much that a change of name is difficult for the airline to facilitate - more that it would become difficult if it became something lots of people did all the time and more than once. Like the FB furore over the huge charge for the printing of a boarding card - budget airlines levy punitive charges to encourage people NOT to do these things and this helps keep costs down.
As grabby as this is (and boy are Easyjet grabby), there's nothing out of the ordinary about any of this. If you want to change a booking you can expect any airline to shaft you but to expect Easyjet to be kind about it is a bit like jumping in a pool of piranhas and complaining about being bitten.

I love philosophy. So, let's get this straight in my head.

On day X I book four airline seats (two outward and two return) and pay for them.

On day Y I need to change the identity of my companion but this does not alter the fact I have already reserved and paid for four seats.

Airline states what I have actually done is unbooked one outward and one return flight (seats now vacant) so I need to rebook those seats at the current higher price.

I wonder what Wittgenstein would have made about it all?

Loz, thanks for that. You may be correct. However, the reality was there was nothing to upgrade to. The plane was as cramped as any old cattle class service. If there was any more leg room for example it would have been no more than a millimetre. And how the couple sitting across from me in my upgraded seat thought they could get away with trying to fit a bag about the size of a double mattress into the overhead locker I'll never know.

Absolutely. I too hate Ryanair, their crap customer service and their arrogant Chief Executive who goes out of his way to insult his customers in order to grab a few headlines.

Aer Lingus' main hope is monopoly law. Ryanair would be the only Irish carrier. However, they are successfull because they are not reliant on the Irish economy and are spread across europe. Aer Lingus is more Ireland-centric and has suffered as a result. The economics may win out.

Ryanair want Aer Lingus' airport slots, especially those that serve Heathrow.

If they win they may simply scrap all long haul services and/or join one of the two big alliances (Star and One World) to provide a long haul service by proxy.

I hate Ryanair for so many reasons, and far more than Easyjet. Firstly Easyjet don't usually fly from London East Coast airport - Stansted. But also because it takes me about 15 minutes to book with Easyjet, helped by the cookie remebering my details and being in their system. Ryanair takes about an hour as I am paranoid that I will do one thing wrong, and I come up in a cold sweat.

Michael wotsitface is also a complete Souness, has no regard for consumer protection and national governments, and will happily wave two fingers at them whilst looking for more ways to rip us off. You get what you pay for, but really they don't have to go that far. I love the fact that you cannot e-mail them.

PS as well as being a professional whinger I worked in consumer protection for a number of years. Not that knowledge of the Sale of Goods Act actually gets you anywhere.

Although I hate Ryanair and now I have a child, don't fly with them, I understand the terms and conditions things, and when I first came to the UK 8 ish years ago and went travelling one weekend a month, they were amazing and cheap and opened up Europe for me. I don't really have sympathy for people who don't understand what they are getting themselves into. It's not like all this hasn't been moaned about before.

What I do have a problem with is Ryanair publishing their complaints figures and claiming that they are the "least complained about airline" when they deliberately make it almost impossible to complain to them. (In fact, you have to send a FAX if I remember correctly). I think this is genuinely misleading and should be looked into by the consumer protection body.

I dont feel sorry for anyone using Easyjet or Ryanair. You know what you are signing up for when you book a LCC.

Unless you are travelling with limited luggage and no need for flexibility or customer service - then do what I do, and avoid them unless absolutely desperate!

In most cases, its actually cheaper to book with BA or another full-fare airline.
