babisticbabymassage
I'm looking for recommendations for a great Sunday roast in East Dulwich and surrounds. Family friendly too as I have a 2 year old. Thanks,Samantha. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/25454-sunday-lunch-recommendations/ Share on other sites

Knomester
I'm not a big fan of going out for a Sunday roast as they never seem to live up to what you can cook at home, but sometimes it's nice not to have to cook!I like The Paxton in Gipsy Hill because it serves a good roast and is also family friendly with plenty of highchairs. The Victoria is also child frindly and has a separate play room for when little ones need space to run around. I've not had a roast there for a long time but they used to be quite good.Maybe the new Cherry Tree (what was The Vale) might be worth a try? MarkE
I'm sure that everywhere has its good and bad days, but we had a Sunday Roast in the Victoria Inn on Bellenden Road a few weeks ago and can honestly say I don't recall the last time I'd had one as good. High quality meat, good variety of options, plenty of veg, and really tasty. It's also been pretty good on the two evenings we visited, although on one occasion the menu was far reduced. Grotty
The Crooked Well without a doubt. The owners run a Friday morning for babies and really show an interest. When we go for Sunday lunch they engage with our 2, bring over toys and books and make us all feel welcome. And thats not even starting on the amazing roasts (whole chickens carved at the table and dripping with juicy goodness)! Its on Grove Vale at the Camberwell end... Cheryl_M
I second The Victoria Inn and as was previously said, they have a great play room for toddlers but it does get very very busy so be sure to book. Saffron
Mr Saff and I used to really like The Herne just off Peckham Rye, but recently it seems the quality of their food isn't what it used to be. It's not bad, it's just not outstanding. When we go there now, we know it's because our 2.5 yr old loves the playgound in the back garden at the The Herne, not b/c we're expecting great food. Although to their credit the last time we were there and the food was late to arrive at our table, Hubbie heckled them mercilessly, and they did give us a 20% discount. david_carnell
Second for the Crooked Well. Also the Bear in Camberwell.Victoria is ok and family friendly but you can feel "unloved" when eating there on a busy Sunday. It gets hectic for staff and customers alike. The kids room is handy though. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/25454-sunday-lunch-recommendations/#findComment-574719 Share on other sites
Carbonara
The Dartmouth Arms, Forest Hill, does an excellent Sunday Lunch. No play area etc, but will do small child portions, have high chairs etc. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/25454-sunday-lunch-recommendations/#findComment-574813 Share on other sites
The.Butchers.Block
Hi,It's great that lots of your are enjoying the food at the Victoria Inn and The Paxton, we supply their meat produce and also supply to the other Capital pubs around the area. We supply good quality produce from British farms which we traditionally butcher on our premises just outside of ED. Quality and provence is important to the capital pubs we supply. I don't want to highjack this thread with my sales pitch (!) but if any restaurants in ED are looking for a traditional butcher give me a PM. ThanksMark - The Butchers Block Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/25454-sunday-lunch-recommendations/#findComment-574864 Share on other sites

stacey-lyn
We had a delicious Sunday lunch today at the Old Nun's Head. The sort-of new chef is spot on. We had the roast lamb, the roast beef and the belly pork - all served with the trimmings. The vegetables (served separately) were great- uber fresh greens, cauliflower in a grain mustard sauce, carrots & purple cabbage. Perfectly prepared and not mush. All roast dishes come with really good large Yorkshires and roast potatoes and at ?12 for the pork (or the roast organic chicken option, ?10 for the vege option - neither of which we tried but they also looked really good) and ?13 for the beef and We asked for rare beef and got tender, rare beef. Portions are generous too. We left pleasantly full (and couldn't finish all the veg). Service was very friendly and quick. There were a few families with toddlers, all well catered for. We sat outside in the rear garden, read the papers for a bit and it was lovely (much quieter than The Rye but that's what we wanted). Can't fault it. A huge thumbs up. The.Butchers.Block
Emma - yes! We do supply the Rye, they had lovely pork bellys this week.I took my two to groombridge place today, they have an enchanted forest which we walked through, the kids loved it. We stopped at a pub called The Little Jug on the way back and had our Sunday lunch, it was the first time ever we managed to sit and eat a (hot!) Sunday lunch all at the same time as a family! Nothing can prepare you for life with two under two years!! Help-Ma-Boab
The Paxton in Gypsy Hill does a good roast. Nice walk from ED to get a hearty appetite and had a barry pork belly there a couple of weeks back. Does get v busy so best to call ahead to see if you need to book.http://www.thepaxtongipsyhill.com/ Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/25454-sunday-lunch-recommendations/#findComment-585281 Share on other sites
VALFR59
Crockeed well definitely my favourite pub in the area! but I didn't know that they were children friendly are we used to go there the evening. Will try it on sunday then!I also like The Rosendale in WD (discovered it recently) and it's really good, various dishes (banoffee pie is to die for!). They have an outside space for kids (play house and few toys, perfect the weather is good)The Dulwich wood house is good and nice venue/atmosphere (in spring/summer nice garden&terraced)but you need to drive to go there probably. GCOakley
any thoughts on the Crown and Greyhound in Dulwich or the Plough by the library? I need somewhere that can cater for 3 generations.... LondonMix
Another recommendation for the Crooked Well. The Palmerston is also great. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/25454-sunday-lunch-recommendations/#findComment-589601 Share on other sites
budur
Avoid Crown and Greyhound at all costs, dreadful food, for Sunday lunch they only do carvary anyway. been there for lunch with kids, decided it was probably the worst food we had for a long time and was there with the girls for a night out, wasn't great either. the only reason we go there is weissbier. Ole
I would avoid the Crown and Greyhound in Dulwich too, on the two separate occasions we have been there (two years apart), each time our food took over an hour to arrive, last time just a couple of weeks ago it took 1.5 hours from ordering before they bought out our food, and once it did it was definitely nothing to wait that long for. The children were desperately bored and fed up and we vowed not to make that mistake a third time. We should have walked out really. EDulwichLover
Crown and Greyhounds food is appaling! Palmerston is the best pub food by a mile in Dulwich, and if you are willing to go a little further afield, I have found The Commercial in Herne Hill to do an excellent Sunday lunch. Saus01
Definitely avoid the Crown and Greyhound if you're into hygiene. Went a few months back and, apart from the food being pretty poor, we had a good view of the serving hatch and saw a number of the waiting stuff doing pretty disgusting things like leaning through the hatch to pick at food, eating it, licking their fingers 'clean' and then serving food/cutlery, etc. I emailed them to let them know and didn't get a response. The roast chicken was big enough to share with my 18 month old, in fact he loved it!! It's quite dark the later it gets so kiddies can't really run about as they get easily trodden on. If you mean in the pub, then kids shouldn't be running around as there are people serving hot food and drinks etc. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/25454-sunday-lunch-recommendations/#findComment-593313 Share on other sites
