womanofdulwich
Obviously people will want to go to these demos, but I'm not sure how possible it will be to social distance.Having followed the rules for months, I'm not keen to lapse. If you're going today, what will you do as precautions? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/253887-public-demonstrations/ Share on other sites

Spartacus
There is a curious paradox in Australia Protesters are out in support of the indigenous population who are treated badly by the police. But I wonder how many of the same protestors are willing to give the land back that their ancestors stole from the same indigenous population ?Now this makes for an interesting angle to the debate. Spartacus
SB There is that element too, that can't be denied that the current non indigenous residents came from other countries including the UK and Ireland. Which is the crux of the paradox, they took the land over and would they , if asked , give it back ? My suspicions are not which would be exactly the same in America if the native Americans (commonly mislabeled as Indians) demanded their land back.Whilst people protest for equal rights, there will always be a point where the equal rights stop in favour of the majority current land owners. Dulwich Born And Bred
But people aren?t asking for their land back per se, they just want to stop being treated as if they are the immigrants when it?s been their home and their ancestors forever. My family in Australia are horrified by the way the indigenous people are treated and have been protesting but is a very real issue trying to get people to understand that no one owns the planet. We need to share and stop treating people like something they have just stepped in. Spartacus
And that's the paradox, your family are appalled at the way the indigenous people are treated, yet your very ancestors treated them badly and stole the land from them in the first place and treated them as second class. My comments aren't about actually giving the land back but that there is a limit to how much people are prepared to give to have true equality.😱 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/253887-public-demonstrations/#findComment-1423943 Share on other sites
Dulwich Born And Bred
My family are mixed heritages hence we are very passionate about racism, injustice and inequality.Again, my emphasis is on not treating people less than you or a non indigenous would like to be treated. Nothing to do with handing over land. It?s about not assuming your needs and rights outweighs theirs just because of race.Spartacus Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> And that's the paradox, your family are appalled> at the way the indigenous people are treated, yet> your very ancestors treated them badly and stole> the land from them in the first place and treated> them as second class. > > My comments aren't about actually giving the land> back but that there is a limit to how much people> are prepared to give to have true> equality.😱 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/253887-public-demonstrations/#findComment-1423949 Share on other sites

Dulwich Born And Bred
Let?s overlook the Cheltenham races, overcrowded tubes, packed beaches, packed parks, queuing for ice cream, coffee, VE celebrations! People haven?t been social distancing for a fair while. At least this is for a worthwhile cause. Furthermore most people were wearing masks unlike those on the beaches/VE celebrations. eastdulwichavenger
Couldn't have said it better myself! I've been to a protest myself and found it very socially distanced, with charities handing out free masks, gloves and bottles of water to help maintain safety as much as possible! Much better than going to the beach/park with mates on the hot bank holiday Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/253887-public-demonstrations/#findComment-1424050 Share on other sites
SnakeFilth
I dont think it would be unreasonable that anyone who attended yesterdays protests to be quarantined for 14 days, if necessary by means of detention. All the sacrifices we made by not going out for months is being jeopardised by a movement who points i agree with, but essentially started because a known criminal was killed by rogue Police on a different continent. If lives mattered so much, why would you potentially put them at risk, just to chant some stuff at Police for a few hours on a Saturday afternoon? Bearing in mind that people can be asymptomatic, this ignoring of the lockdown is dangerous for the vulnerable of our society. eastdulwichavenger
I have been quarantining, as have all the people that I know who went. All the charities who run the protest specifically ask that people only attend one every 14 days. In terms of protesting, historically, it?s been proven that they do incite change. Especially when they?re against entire systems that have been built to oppress people?s rights, how else are people meant to show they?re unity against one cause? As for the ?known criminal?, I think we can all agree the ?known criminals? are really the four police officers who killed a man who wasn?t resisting arrest. Two of the policemen had previous complaints on their record, Derek Chauvin had 18 prior complaints and Tou Thao had 6. All these complaints have been linked back to violence and racial profiling. Maybe this a time where we question the policing system and how they?re trained etc, rather than civilians. tiddles
I think the blatant disregard of The govt recommendations by a govt advisor killed off people?s perceptions as to how much we needed to socially distance. There was a clear sea change after that fiasco. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/253887-public-demonstrations/#findComment-1424170 Share on other sites
Blah Blah
I agree tiddles. I don't think government really understand how much that defence of Cummings has undermined any measures they are trying to enforce. To be fair though, things were always going to be more challenging once the good weather came. There is an air of complacency at the moment for sure. Things may look very different by October though, once seasonal flu and other coughs and colds take hold.
