Local police gradually build up a 'profile' of where crimes are being committed and have in the past done plain clothes surveillance. Some crime in ED decreased following arrests and imprisonment of offender(s). Some types of crimes are 'specialties' of certain criminals and police can often identify the person(s) involved - frequently they can pin point them to recently released prisoners. This is why it is important to report such incidences to your local Neighbourhood Police Team.
I'm a police sceptic but the last two times I've reported something (burglary in progress and suspicious men in car refusing to leave private land) the police responded very effectively. Other people's experiences may differ.
Sadly if it's valuable it will be nicked. Church roofs and lead when I was a kid. Things can be done to try to control the scrap metal market but there will always be ways and means. Nicking the copper cable from overhead lines, when live, shows how much money can be made. On a lighter touch I had a car once which provided spare parts for someone with the same model. They nicked the four plastic wheel trims, but as one was damaged then took a further one when I replaced them. And then the passenger side mirror - didn't even realise you could prise that off. I had a wheel taken once from another car, but they kindly left it on another wheel they just happened to have on them, so thanks for not letting it fall on its axle. A bonnet. And once a battery. All of these being pretty low value so not the organised gangs that take the catalysts.

Another car crime

Last evening at around 7.00 pm my wife heard a loud noise outside. Looking through the window she saw 3 men around our car. I ran out and challenged them (perhaps rather stupidly as I am no longer in the first flush of youth) and a man in a mask (white, aged around 35) said that he was affixing a clamp because my car was untaxed. A slim man emerged from under my vehicle and another stood the other side. Knowing that my car was taxed I shouted at my wife to call the police whereupon the 3 men rushed away (carrying my catalytic converter) into nearby Marsden road and tore off in a small dark car at high speed, almost knocking a Deliveroo bloke off his bike.

They used (I believe) a small jack with a drill to screw it up and an angle grinder to cut off the exhaust pipe. The angle grinder I assume made the noise that alerted my wife. The whole procedure cannot have taken more than a few minutes.

The sheer audacity of doing this at 7.00 pm outside our house in a fairly busy, well-lit street amazes me. Several people must have seen them. The police did not put in an appearance but in fairness the perpetrators had long gone.

I'm posting this to alert other local residents to be vigilant and to enquire as to there were any witnesses. If so, have a word with the local police.

    • As a result of the Horizon scandal it now seems very clear that the Post Office management are highly disingenuous and not be trusted!  There needs to be a campaign launched to challenge the threatened closure, unless the Post Office can demonstrate beyond doubt that the branch is loss making - and even then it could argued that better management could address this. I hope the local media take this up and our MP  and a few demonstrations outside wouldn’t do any harm. Bad publicity can be very effective!
    • Unlikely. It would take a little more than a bit of Milton to alter the pH of eighty-odd thousand gallons of water.
    • It actually feels as though what I said is being analytically analysed word by word, almost letter by better. I really don't believe that I should have to explain myself to the level it seems someone wants me to. Clearly someones been watching way too much Big Brother.
    • Sadly they don't do the full range of post office services
